lol, yeah, they drill the glass as a plate glass. Then it goes into and oven and gets heated to higher temps and then quickly cooled, this is called tempering, same process as steel.

Jeez, who dug up this relic??
PERSONALLY, I'm not a fan of drilling something that didn't come that way. There are a lot of quality external overflows that would suffice. Then again you don't have that peace of mind with external that you do with say an AGA tank.

It varies from manufacturer and sizes.
Take for instance the tank i'm setting up. It's tempered all the way around. A finnex tank. Some of the smaller tanks are like this, however my AGA 75g only the bottom is tempered.

Yeah it does vary between the manufactures, but its pretty much an industry standard to temper the bottom glass as that holds the most weight. Although depending on the tank size and such sometimes that is not necessary. Again this is why I'm not personally a fan of drilling unless it came that way. If you're gonna spend a couple hundred dollars on a tank, you might as well spend the extra $30-50 and have it come predrilled with an internal overflow instead of potentially cracking or blowing out the side your drilling into.

id have to agree with nick on this one. Id avoid drilling and just purchase and aftermarket hang on overflow. The risk of it failing is there but i feel this risk is less then destroying your whole tank....idk
