wrasse
hey guys/gals,
I have a question. I purchased a blue line wrasse from Dr foster and smith about 3 months ago. It really seems like no matter what i feed i can never keep wrasse fat and healthy. So far the only luck i have had is with a yellow coris and a sixline. Whats the dang secret. I feed spirulina brine, regular brine, pemysis, flakes etc... i try and feed every 3 days as to not pollute my tank so much with left over food. Is this not enough for wrasse?? any insight as to the possible cause would be sweet and if I can get this current wrasse back to nice and fat, ill do what ever I need to do lol.
my other question is, whats all the hype about pe mysis. I dont see any benefit that i havnt noticed from brine shrimp?? if it has so much protein then why can my fish never keep and meat on there bones???
sorry for the ranting lol, but im getting sick of loseing wrasse, considering there my favortie species of fish.

I was only feeding every three or four days for a while, due to a slight cyano issue on one of my rocks. During this time, I lost a couple fish for unexplained reasons and I had a lot of fish that got really ticked off at me. I now feed heavily every day, and I have no indications of the tank or the fish suffering. Wrasse LOVE food, and should be fed pretty often, IMO.
During my limited feeding, I did manage to keep my Clown Fairy Wrasse alive, but he wasn't very happy and didn't look as vibrant and active as he does now. So, I would suggest trying to feed every day, or at least every other day. It's possible that he just isn't getting enough food.
As far as polluting the tank, as long as you have a good skimmer and biological filtration, you should be fine. If you run into algae problems or nitrates or anything, then you can cut back the feeding a little bit or maybe look into your methods of nutrient export.

i did manage to catch him and put him in my 55 with my yellow coris wrasse so now ill have an opportunity to feed daily. I have been feeding flakes more then normal so im hoping he'll start taking that more often.
what about the PE mysis question. what are some experiences with that food??

and maybe any other types of food i can look into that would help my situation. Its more for the wrasse but if easy to keep wrasse are suffering, what else is even though they may no look sick??

Nick,
For the questons on PE-Mysis goto www.mysis.com, it will answer most of your questions on why to use it. I have found my fish respond very well with it and PE-Mysis is now %40 of the food I feed my fish can corals. Feed your tank a little more often. Not like me of course but more than every 3 days. Also adding some live copeopods would fatten the fish up.
Thanks
Matthew

the Mysis are a bit bigger than the other frozen cubed food, but I think it's also a bit "cleaner"...I don't notice the phosphate buildup and floaties as much with it. The bigger predators love it (ok, everyone loves it) though it's a bit too big for some of my polyps to fully ingest.

I feed at least once a day...often two small meals a day...I find my fish do much better with more frequent small meals.

I stoped feeding daily when my tank was still going through the algae stages... Now that theyre over, I feed flake daily (for fish), seaweed every other day (tangs), mysis every other day (fish and corals), and PE mysis every third day (for my larger fish, although most of the smaller fish try to shove it down their throat too lol).

i do rinse the food as well so i guess i should pick up the feeding a bit. I just always seem to find a way into the algae problem lol. No matter what i do it shows up. I have made tons of additions since i broke the tank down to change the sand, including new chamber heights for the skimmer, now it works the same every day. rinsing food to remove the phosphates etc... reduced lighting schedule and even cut down on my feeding as it was suggested. Now i need to increase my feeding lol, just can't win.
matt, i dont even bother asking if you have any live pods because you never do when i need them. Is there any chance you can PM me when you get some in so i can add them to my tank. id be whilling to bet thats why i never have any pods. Ive even made a little pod house so fish cant get in there and eat the producers but not even that is working.

Ya rinsing is a good idea...I used to rinse all my food until I found what I'm using now which is rinsed in RO water like 5 times while it's made...anything else I would thaw and rinse.

Matt you carry PE? Hum that may save me some trips. I was going to post pics of the difference of pe vs the competition. ( I have them just never uploaded yet.) Brine are basically useless as adults, unless they feed them and then freeze them. When they are newly hatched they have nutritional value. Its interesting to hatch and raise but its really time consuiming.
PE has a higher level of nutrition compared to the comp (so its claimed) but I mean the physical looks of them are night and day. Yes they are much bigger then everyone elses. I started useing it about 2 months ago. My only issue is that some of my coarls are to small to eat these guys.

okay. thanks matt.
Drew thanks for the wishes. I havnt seen the wrasse in 2 days since i moved him in the 55, hope he's alright.
matt, aaron. i really like the PE, i was just wondering if it was a beneficial as it says it is. I guess time will tell but that seems to be the problem that unless you have a wide range of foods you feed, your fish seem to lack something lol.
jnicho, i guess i dont really rinse for say, i drain the water that it was thawed in then put in new water, im not sure if thats considered the same thing?? lol.
