Toadstool Leather Help
We are now on our third Toadstool Leather . We really want to have success with this. None of them have ever opened and the past 2 have ended up dying within a week. We have NO problem with ANY other coral we have tried. Any suggestions? This is supposed to be an easy coral to grow and we are struggling!!!!!! leather

What are your tank parameters? and what kind of lighting as well as how strong of current do you have it in? Or have you had them in?

It is a 55 with with coralife skimmer, compact lights acitinic and daylight (although tomorrow I pick up a new metal halide / actinic combo from otp) Fluval canister 405 and 2 powerheads. Water is ro and measures out fine and we have had no problem with other leathers, frogspawn, hammer, torch, mushrooms and zoas.

Scott, bring me a sample of your water when you come here tomorrow. Welcome to lark. What are you using in your fluval for media?

Yeah, by the way Welcome to lark, also what kind of flow do you have on the Toadstool, I really haven't had any toadstools die but they do get a coating on them when they are growing and shed that...They don't need high light, granted a few of mine don't have real high growth rates but just like anything takes time. I have one of mine in relatively high flow and another in a lesser flow and the one that is in the higher flow seems to do better.
Thanks
Cary

1 from you and the last two in Roch. The only things I HAVEN't bought from you! Maybe that is the problem. The first one was right after we set up so I figured that had something to do with it! Wont be able to bring water tomorrow as I am not stopping at home before heading there. Tom can bring a sample down this weekend! The fluval has carbon, prefilter, and biomax.

I've had great success with my toadstool in medium to medium high current but, it needs to be a turbulant current (meaning not direct off the powerhead but, if you can make it bounce off of the glass or be partially directed with another powerhead they grow well for me). I have mine pretty high up in the tank and for the longest time had it at the highest point in my tank and it grew like a weed. It's all about getting them used to the light. The other Toadstools you had... What kind of water did they come out of? It could have been that the water they came from was not the same as your tank (that is if you did not drip acclimate). I find that the stuff I get from Matt at OTP I do not "have to" drip acclimate... But, most I still do as I do with most other things I buy.
Also, when you got the other toadstools... did you place them in the tank and just leave them alone or did you continue trying to move them around the tank? Because like any coral the less you handle them the better they will do. Reguardless what kind of current or lighting conditions they have.

I bought a nice toadstool from Chris Watkins, for some reason it almost died in my main tank. In desperation I moved it to my nano where it immediately rebounded. When I upgraded tanks I tried it in the main setup again, it looked like the same thing was going to happen, so I moved it back where it promptly opened up again. my false percs host it now so I just keep it in my nano. Something in my main setup does not agree with it.
When yours died did they get black necrotic patches all over it? I have no problem with other leathers in the main tank either.
