Thinking of upgrading

Ok if we can talk my wife into it, my son and I are thinking about upgrading from a 55 to a 75 ot 90. My question is how much do I need to worry about the floor supporting the new weight?

Should be fine. I heard somewhere that you don't need to worry about building extra supports until you get to 150gal+

Also, if your tank is against and outside wall of your house you should def. be fine.

just be sure to pick a sturdy area that will run cross wise (creating a T with your joists and tank stand) your floor supports. This will help ensure proper distribution between the joist's. Most homes will be 16" on center spacing for each floor joist so you will hit 3 for sure. Also, how old is your house?? new houses, 1995 and up, will normally use something called I joists, laminated lumber which is very strong. And yes, a outside load bearing wall will be much strong then an interior load bearing wall due to the foundation the house rests on.

If I were you I'd do a 75 with corner overflows, depends on what kind corals you're keeping but the problem most people run into with the 90 is getting light to penetrate the depth of the tank. I moved up from a 55 to my 75 and I like it, the only thing I'd change is the position of my overflow to a corner.

Estimate the weight of the tank. Should if I had to guess be just over 1000lbs. They say saltwater weighs 10lbs per gallon, if you're doing a sump estimate another 30 gallons, so 1000lbs in water. Couple pounds of live rock and stuff. Thinking about it in a different way, 1000lbs is like 6 adult men standing in the same 4 foot space. If you have access to the basement and you're that worried about it you can always get some joist supports to hold that part of the flooring up.

I agree with Nick on the 75 vs the 90, but for a different reason. I REALLY don't like that 24" depth for cleaning and aquascaping. Not too bad if the piece you're reaching for is right in front, but try reaching the back corner without getting your whole armpit in there... not cool. I'll be upgrading from my 90 to a 125 or better ASAP for that exact reason. Good luck with your decision!
