Picked up another

I went down to Madison today, and picked up another skimmer, it is a Euroreef 5-2 i think. I am trying to look it up on their site right now. So now I have my RS-80 and a 5-2?, on 220 gallons of water. I will get pictures up in a couple days. I can't wait to do a gate valve mod and a mesh mod on it, this will probably doulbe to performance.

The best part about the whole thing is i got it for $65 plus a 3/4 frag of bottlebrush.

I can't wait to get it in the water.

Chris,

IIRC, the 5-2 is pretty much the same as the RS 80. I think it has just about the same dimensions, but then again I could be thinking of a different older EuroReef skimmer. The only difference, other than the type of acrylic it's made out of, should be the impeller. I'm look forward to hearing how the mesh mod works out for you. My RS 80 isn't enough for my approx. 100 gallons of total water volume with my fish and the fact that I like to keep them well-fed, so I just got a Lifereef SVS2-24 used from Reef Central. It should be here in a day or two, so it'll be nice to see how it does compared to the RS 80. I'm planning to run them both for a little while to compare how they do, but I may go with just the Lifereef if it skims as well as I expect it to.

Keep us posted with the 5-2, especially how the mesh mod works out!
Joe Schneider

Yep, I just Googled it and the 5-2 is the same as the RS 80 they make now, just not with the newer impeller in the pump.

ok then it must be a 5-3 because it is 4 or 5 inches taller than my rs-80, and has a bigger pump on it.

Chris,

Here's a link for ER's older skimmers. If your new skimmer has a larger pump on it (Sedra 5000, from the sound of it), then it must have a wider body than your RS 80 as well. Keep me posted with how the mesh mod works out for you!

I went down and checked everything over on the skimmer. I am getting some good skimmate with it already with about 12 hours of it running. It is about 25 inchs tall, with a body of 5inches and a neck that is 2.5 inches. The pump is a dolphin pump with a needle wheel. it is rated at 560 gallons and hour. I have been doing a little looking around, and havn't found anything that fits those sizes. Well it doesn't really matter to me what it is as long as it works good.

Chris

I will post picks tomorow, when I can borrow a camera.

Apparently you're supposed to PASTE after you copy... :-)

Yeah, I don't think a skimmer like that is mentioned on EuroReef's webpage... Hmm. Well, I'm glad to hear it's skimming well for ya already.

maybe the pump was changed or something, but is has the dimensions of a 5-3, so I think that is what it is. Hansmatt what size pump does you skimmer have on it?

the 5-3 has a dolphin pump that is the equiv. to a sedra 3500. I think that I have the same skimmer, the output is 560 I believe. I was able to contact dolphin for a replacement magnet assembly, turns out that they are actually the same pump. They are re-badged for sale on east/west coasts, but the dolphin's are not made anymore I take it. I got an ASM assembly/needlewheel which works great.
Chris, you got the deal of the month, used these typically go for $150-$175 because they are better builds than the newer ones. As you know, the gate valve mod does wonders! Hope it works like a charm for you.

Chris,
I was doing an early-morning water change, and of course my skimmer wouldn't start up again. You should probably just throw yours out (and let me know when you do so)
I do have the same pump, 55w, 650gph, 1foot head.

I'm doing a vinegar soak today, skimmerless but using airstones to make sure there is enough O2. My Calcium reactor really creates deposits on the impellers, as I just had to soak my tunze's to de-lime them this weekend.

Every two to three months I rip my return and skimmer pumps out and give them a good hot water and vinegar bath... Darn calcium deposits... :-)
