New purchase....

Well it isn't as exciting as a new coral or fish but, because of heat problems in my fish room, I broke down and bought a portable Air Conditioner. I still have to work out how I am going to vent it outside, my original plan isn't going to work, but I should be able to come up with something.

Ok, here it is, 8000 btu unit, been running it since Sunday night, temp in the room was above 80, and just checked it tonight and it is just a little over 72. Tank temp on Sunday was up over 80, and this morning it was right at 80. Now tonight it is down to about 76. Biggest thing when I first started it was the water container filled very quickly, dumped it Sunday night before bed and it was filled by the morning, now it will last for at least 8 hours. Other thing is venting, right now I have it venting out of the room through the hot air vent, will eventually move it so it vents to the outside through the existing fan exhaust.

Don't you think that having it set at 72 is kinda much? You could make it like 76 so it doesn't run non-stop for so long and thus making it so you wouldn't have to empty the container as much. Either that or if you can hook a hose line up to it so that it can be drained into a water drain.

Just a thought.

Yep, figured I would bump the temp back up some, was really trying to get it down to begin with. Problem with the drain part is that I don't have a floor drain in the room, would have to have the unit sitting up so it could drain into the sink, or at least into the pipe that runs next to the desk. Was also thinking about just having it drain back into my auto topoff tub, but I have read mixed reviews on re-using the water, some say that it would be too dirty. I would think yeah it would pick up some dirt but it would be better than tap water with how they treat that...

the problem I would see with using the water from the de-humidifier for the auto top-off would be what kinds of bacteria and such could be caught up in the filters of the humidifier. Not to mention what all could actually be floating around in the air.

I'd say the main problem with reusing the water would be that it could pick up some heavy metal from the unit's coils. Aquarium chillers have titanium coils which aren't afected by the salt and they don't add heavy metals to the water as it goes through the unit. The condensed water from your portable air conditioner may contain heavy metals that could kill your corals. I wouldn't take the chance.
