Leather Q

Alright guys/gals, I have a little question for you all. I've had 3 kenya leather trees on a rock with mushrooms all over it that have been getting bigger and bigger by the day. I added some pulsing xenia a few weeks back that accidentally attached to the wrong rock!! The xenia attached itself to the rock with the kenyas on it. After the xenia had been attached to the rock for a while one of the kenyas (one closest to the xenia) closed up for about 4 days. Shedding? Yes, it shed. Since then, it has not opened as large as it used to. If leathers get too close to eachother do they secrete something that stunts the growth of others nearby? Should I try and move the xenia from the rock to another rock? Will the xenia not get along with the kenyas once it covers the entire rock? Does anyone know if these corals can touch eachother??

Thanks for any thoughts on this,

Golden

They will battle each other. Mushrooms can actually do it too. Looks nice though.

I moved 2 of the xenia heads onto the rock to the left of the colony. There remains 2 xenia heads on the rock with the kenyas and shrooms. Is it important that I move them? Should I leave them there? The xenia can touch the shrooms and are about 2 inches from the kenyas.....

all corals will battle each other just a matter of how much depends on the coral.....is what i was told when i started to convert over from FOWLR to a reef......

stinging corals will kill other corals.....nems will have chemical warfare.....i noticed that my pink kenya and and greenstripes werent gettting along and had to move the kenya and now its happy again....

ya might have to bust all them up and give them their own space.....they do look good like that but might not grow to much......

im gona be having another battle issue with my shrooms shortly as they are growing towards my brown button polyps......and thats gona be an interesting move......

but im sure that someone on here that has more REEF NERD experience will have a better solution or idea on what to do....

You'll get moderate growth so I wouldnt get to concerned right now as should be plenty of room for now. Just frag it if they get to big. Then bring me the frags to trade. I have a couple of items here too.LOL

Well this sucks, I had a nice reply to this earlier and its gone....? It went something like....

"Leather Corals secrete several types of chemical toxins, called Terenoids Toxin, as a defense mechanism. Therefore, it is important that there is ample space around a Leather Coral and that no other coral should come in touch with it."

In my experience even being down stream in your water movement other corals can have stunted growth. I really only had problems with my toadstool though...
