Jason, take a look at this...

Jason,

I was browsing threads on RC just now, and I saw a picture of someone's corner tank that has a coral with the exact same growth pattern as that crazy blue sps frag I gave you a while ago! It's in this thread if you scroll down a bit: http://reefcentral.com/forums/showth...readid=1326054

I still can't ID it for you, but I'm glad someone else has a coral that grows the same crazy way!

-Joe

Yeah it's definately similiar... I'm contacting the person now... Maybe they can at least give me some idea of the familia the coral is in so that I can narrow it down to about 10-20 different types and then bring some pics along with me to F&S so that I can narrow it down even further still. Thanks though for the lookout!

Do you have a pic of the coral or what coral in the link is it?

If you're looking at the picture, find the clam. Go up from there and you'll see the huge feather duster in the rock. Go up more from there and the first sps colony you'll see is similar to what I gave Jason. The one in the picture on RC is green, but the one I had was a light blue-ish color. I'm not sure if it has changed colors in Jason's tank or anything.

What's weird is that it grows outward more than it does upward, and the branches (when they do grow upward) aren't cylindrical...they're a really funky shape. Whatever this sps is, it just has the most bizarre growth pattern that Jason and I could never figure out.

Well, actually in my tank it is beginning to grow upwards... But, that's just the new shoots.... The established ones that were already there from when I bought it from you are still continuing to grow outwards... As Joe said it's just bizarre. The coral that the person had in his tank is not the same thing that I got from you though... I asked him for an i.d. (which he had) and it's NOTHING like what I have. Unless it goes through a serious metamorphesis as it gets larger. Part of the reason that I think that the branches were going sideways in your tank was the direction of your current. The current in my tank where I have it is a swirling current thus they are forced up a bit. (Guess I'll find out as it grows out a bit more).

My guess would be that it is some type of hydophora based on it's bumps, or possibly some type of elkhorn. I will try to remember to look at some pics in one of my books tonight and see what I come up with.

Definitely Elkhorn, Brian. I just looked that up on Google, and what I had looks like it was some type of an Elkhorn.

Well that was easy. Glad you found out what it is. Elkhorns are usually pretty easy to keep.

Elkhorn is what I was looking at and based on the branching of an Elkhorn coral I do not believe that it what this is... Elkhorns typically are very rounded at the tips (similiar to that of a digitata). This is very spikey throughout pretty much the whole coral that's the only reason I feel that is not it... As for a hydophora I'm thinking the elkhorn is closer than that is... The hydophora seems like it is closer to my blue-tip acropora. Well, at least it gives me a place to start.

It's so funny how things can look differently under different lighting. Under my 14K Phoenix bulbs it was a light metallic blue/silver sort of color!

Coralife 150 watt 10000k bulbs here. I think I might try 14000k next time though as my tank is quite white in color.

Bulbs do make a big difference with SPS corals. It's amazing how different the corals look under 10k, 12k, 14k, 20k. Each small spectrum shift really makes a big difference. Although, the par really drops off as well.

I'll look up the coral tonight, but you might need to wait until the coral gets larger to get it pinpointed. It doesn't look like a elkhorn or hydro now that I could see it from closer.
