Getting my 125 going..oh and painting a stand?

Got my 125 tank with corner overflow from Matt down at OTP( "yeah you know me....") and have a stand 70#'s of dry rock. Need some more when Matt gets some in.

Just found a light on ebay. http://cgi.ebay.com/SunPod-72-3x150-...DLVI%26ps%3D54

Current Class A reconditioned 72'' Sunpod. Picked it up for $350. Has 3x150 MH. Would have liked 250. But it should work.

Now I am new to this whole sump thing and want to do it the right way so I am reading up on the in' and out's and will have plenty of questions to ask as I get ready.

But for now I need to prep the stand.
I have a pine stand that has a brown stain stain to it. Does not appear to have a much of a clear coat/lacquer to it. Tank and light I am getting will be black. I want to paint it black and de-stress it. Do I need to do anything to the wood first other than cleaning it? Also I was going to add Kilz to the inside of the frame due to the sump that will be under it.

Also what is a good paint to use? I was thinking a flat or low sheen spray paint(krylon).

Missing anything?

I'd prime the stand first before you paint. I think your black paint will stick better to a primer rather thsn stain. I don't think you need to KILZ the inside of the stand. Wouldn't hurt but probably not necessary.
I think in the long run,, you would be happier with brushing or rolling the paint on. (cheaper too.) I've never been happy with a sprayed paint on wood.

I would rough the current finish prior to the primer. If you don't you could very well end up with areas that the primer and paint will not stick. It the same theory that you can paint enamel over latex but not latex over enamel. I watched a guy paint a truck and when we came back outside 10 min later all the paint was on the floor...LOL!!! And if you do roll on your paint, use a foam roller for a nice smooth finish. Use a super fine sand paper between coats of color and it should look great...

When I did my first stand, I used a marine poly for the inside. Good enuf for the ocean, good enuf for my sump. Can't wait to see pics... good luck!
