for viewing fun

I thought I would show some of the things I got from the tcmas swap.
in pic are reverse gorrila nipples, tubs, unkown sofar, and tubs from another person.

purple seafan has been open ever since its been in the tank

I also bought a Harlequin shrimp. Its about 3". I figured it could eat the astrea's.....I have been wanting one for a long time.... I didn't think this through all the way I guess. The next day I found him eating the orange Linkia! (for the record it was in the process of growing its 2 missing legs back.

this one wasn't from the swap but it has been growing for the past 9 months now..... a nice little ball sponge. I haven't fully ID it yet. 2 pics for you. First is a bad pic since it only come out at night. This is a where's waldo pic

and possibly the best for last, also from the swap,

and does it glow. Jason I thought you would like this.

I also ended up getting a few other zoo's and 3 different rics, a blue, different orange, and turquise

Cool Harlequin Shrimp!!! Unfortunately, as you've just discovered, it will only eat starfish. If the person selling it to you said it eats snails, well, nope... Starfish only. If you can provide a constant supply of starfish, it will thrive! They're so cool!!!!

Looks like a Blasto Merletti if I were to guess based on the head size and shape.

Well, it might eat small starfish like the little white ones in an established sand bed. But, I'd imagine a Linckia is a tasty delicacy for your Harlequin. I've never read too much on them, but they're beautiful and fascinating creatures. Keep me posted on yours, as I'm interested to learn more about them!

I'd feed a Harlequin whatever the cheapest local, readily available starfish is. In this area it's...maybe chocolate chip starfish??? The reason I probably wouldn't ever keep one is that I know that I, personally, would get really sick and tired of always having to go to the store and buying starfish. And I don't even know how often they feed or need to be fed. But they sure are cool!!

Dumb question and I'm not even sure if this would work or not... But, would it be possible just to cut off one of the starfish's legs and feed that to the Harlequin? I mean if you can get a starfish that is durable enough to withstand having a leg cut off that would make it so potentially the star could grow the leg back thus making it so that you wouldn't have to kill the starfish to feed the shrimp you would just be taking a leg at a time. Heck you could have several stars and just alternate off if it takes a very long time for the legs to recover.

Just a thought.

Jason

You are a Savage Jason!
I know that they eat them, but that doesn't mean we should feed them! I know it's no different from buying copods to feed, or us eating a cow or pig, and I'm not saying we should convert the Harl. Shrimp to a vegan diet...but I don't think that hacking off a limb from a cow, pig, chicken etc, and saving the rest for later is very appetizing either!

Well, if you were the starfish what would you prefer... To be fed to a shrimp that will completely devour you... or have a leg cut off that you can completely regrow and not die? Being a person that enjoys living I would choose the second option. Not to mention that if that would work it would be MUCH more reasonable as far as feeding in concerned. It would be like growing pods for a mandarin. Also, I know that some starfish in nature will break off a leg when attacked so that the main part of itself will survive (saw it on discovery channel and now that I think of it I think it was harlequin shrimp that were attacking the star lol. Funny now that I think about it).

As I said it's just an option to look at and it is better to think about doing this than buying a shrimp that you can not take care of.

Jason
