75 or 90 HELP
Ok everyone I need some serious honest advice. Monday is my sons 18 b-day. He has been wanting a bigger set up. Right now we have a 55 that si doing REALLY well. My question is: Should we get him a bigger tank for his b-day, or jsut stick with the 55. If we go bigger dp we go 75 or 90? We will not upgrade the light, as it is only a couple months old, but will do a sump of some sort, whatever Matthew at otp recomends.
Any advice out there......Would anyone be interested in a 55 and stand if we upgrade?

Really if you want to upgrade... the first question I ask is with your current 55 gallon is it Reef Ready (RR) or just a standard 55? Either way what I would do is go with EITHER of the 75 or the 90 Both are very similar in actual size. But, the biggest thing I would do would be to use the 55 AS your sump. I mean you already have it why not put it to use?
Just an option which would make things pretty easy to change over too.

Yes, good point Jason, I was waiting to reply, you can get acrylic at menards and it is pretty easy to work with to portion of the sump and the 55 would actually make a descent one...we just did it with a 40.

I have NO clue how that would work or if it is doable in my location/situation. I need the sump to fit under the new tank in the cabinet. Maybe I am getting over my head. The 55 is a standard aquarium, not reef ready.

I am going to be bringing in a stand for a 75 that Dwight built to Olde Towne next weekend, not sure if the 55 would fit under it and the 55 is longer I think, well maybe not...half to look it up, do a search on Tank Dimensions and see what it says for the 75 and 55.

Make the stand and the 55gal will fit underneath. That would make a excellent sump. Or maybe Dwights would work wich would be great.

the 55 might work under the 75... the 55 is 48 1/4 x 12 3/4 x 21 and the 75 is 48 1/2 x 18 1/2 x 21 3/8....

Well, Josh's setup (before he upgraded to his 90 with the 75 in the basement) was a 75 with a 55 under the stand... I know that he had to put the stump in from the top... So, that was the only downfall... But, a person could always make one of the ends of the stand to be removable.
Just an option.

I have a 90, and I would gladly give it up for a 75. For a FOWLR the 90 would be ok, but because I have my arms in my reef all the time, the 90 is awfully deep. I mean, I literally have to wash my deodorant off before going in. It's too deep!!

id just build your own stand. Wood is very strong and if built properly you can make a very nice stand in appearance without the use of a ton of lumber. You can also over build the stand so you have about a 2" lip on the sides and in from of the tank. This would take in account the thickness of the wood (plywood) being used for the casing, and the common 2x4 used for the actual support members, so the tank would fit perfectly. Some math involved but nothing thats to hard to do. If you wanted any help, i would probably be able to help out a bit. i would have most all the tools needed as well.
just let me know, i can show you some pics of my stand made for a 90. test rated was to distribute around 6000lbs so more then plenty strong for a 90.

I do like my 90g...a bit more volume & swimming room for the fish...That being said I just saw a beautiful rimless tank that was only 20" deep (but 30" wide and 48" long) that was AMAZING. I think I would give up the depth for width, but in this case it's not a choice. Yes, it's deeper, but I'd do it.

Well Matt thanks for offering to buy me one for my birthday!! You have til November 15th to save up! That is sooooooo nice of you!!!
And an attempt to keep the thread on topic.
My old 75 which is now a sump was great! Jen is right that it is a lot easier to work on a 75 compared to a 90. I have to stand on my tippy toes to work on the bottom of my 90. However I would much rather have the extra swimming room and water volume. I would definitely use your 55 as a sump!
