45Gallon Tank log
Well my project has officially started. Equipment i have so far includes:
45 Gallon tank purchased from Brian.
36" Nova Extreme T-5 Fixture
Megaflow 2 Sump
CPR overflow model CS90
Turboflotor 1000 skimmer with OR 2500
2 Maxijet 1200's
1 Koralia #2
200 watt Stealth heater
Wave maker powerstrip
50# liverock
20# Tahitian black Sand
Stuff to pickup:
Heater (prolly gonna invest in a Jaeger)
Overflow (Have a buddy with one)
I am sure I am missing stuff, at work so I can't focus 100%
I am trying to decide what fish I would like in this tank. I have thought of Maroon Clowns, six line wrasse, I still want a blue assessor if I can ever find one, toyed with the idea of a volitan lion. The problem I have is that for example the lion would mean I have a species tank, and I would really like an assortment. From my understanding the maroons are pretty aggressive also. So I may just end up with a peaceful community tank. How big of a load could I put in a 45g tank with a megaflow sump connected? so many possibility's and I am a ways away from adding livestock but I like to dream I will post pictures of my start later today.

Well your livestock can be as high as your filtration can keep up with realistically. Not to mention how well your husbandry is on the tank. If you did water changes 3 times a day physically your tank could handle have 50+ fish in it.. But, is this realistic? Not really. A better question to ask would be how often do you plan on doing water changes? After knowing this then answering you question is much easier to do. Like myself I have nearly a 200 gallon setup with 2 fish in it lol... I don't really like doing water changes all that often so with an extremely low bioload on the tank I can push the water changes off a bit more. This doesn't mean that I still don't/shouldn't do them. I can just make the system maintain itself a bit better a bit longer. *Just an example*

What's a water change? J/K. I try to do them periodically.
Are you planning on getting a skimmer and if so, what one?

ain't that the truth? I just did my first one in 3 months...sort of tough doing one with two broken feet. Nothing like full sump scrubbing, skimmer soaking, and 30g water change to get the blood pumping!

No plans for a skimmer yet, I have to see what my buddy can get me for a decent price. I am trying to do everything on the cheap so my wife doesn't leave me. Although she loves the end result.
two broken feet Hansmatt? yow! How did that happen?

Running-stress fracture on one, ran into my son at the pool (barefoot) on the other. Gotta spend all of my pent-up energies on my tank now that I can't run for awhile.
Though it was a major bummer, it's just a tiny bit funny

Been Busy
Well, I have been rather busy Tank is running, I got 40# of live rock from Oyan out of Rochester. I had the tank running for three days with just salt and water before I added the rock. Popped the rock in and then added the Tahitian black sand. It looks pretty nice imho. There were some Kenya trees on one of the rocks and I noticed two small starfish along with some bristle worms. I also have seen 4-5 small anenome's and I am afraid they are aptaisia (sp?) So one of the first critters I will be getting is a pair of peppermint shrimp and hopefully one of them will take a liking to them. I should be getting my overflow next weekend so I can hookup my Megaflow 2 sump. Pics are here http://handsomefella.org/default.aspx?aid=12 on one of my websites. Take a peek.
Anybody feel like throwing out some ideas for stocking? I am fielding my options.
As for adding frogspawn already, well I underestimated the coral warfare in my nano, even though the spawn was up high in my nano (as high as a 12gallon) I think it was attacking my brain. I had never seen my brain so mad, so I had to move the frogspawn before permanent damage occurred. Was this a bad move? Flame suit is on Any suggestions or feedback positive or negative?

Syndwave, do you think my frogspawn is ok? I was worried since I had an hour drive from Rochester with the live rock not immersed, the kenya's are doing great and the frogspawn looks great too, just worried Also is it ok to put the frogspawn on the substrate or should I stick him in the rock?
Thanks for the compliments!

The frogspawn will be fine on the bottom of your tank as long as there is good light and water movement. I would maybe elevate it up about 1/2- 1' from th bottom substrate to get good flow under it otherwise I thougt it was looking really nice.

get a piece of PVC pipe and put the base of it inside of the piping. I've done this before with some anemones that I've had issues with moving around my tanks in the past.
