You wouldn't have to tear it apart to do that... You could take plastic over the top of the tank and keep a fan going to blow any fumes away from the tank while you painted it. It really wouldn't be that complicated to do it while it was still installed if a person really had the ambition to do so.

Well, I painted on Monday and the stand still stinks!! Looks to be about 5 days before it is totally cured and dry. Gonna use drawer brackets attached to the inside top trim for the light. Saw sndwave80's set up today, he had this rig and it was so smart. Rolls the light back for tank access without having to remove it. For me it's great since a 60" light is alot for me to handle...

Paint is done. Will be looking for trim tomorrow. I should have it in the house by wed. I did remove all the old silicone from the front of the tank. It was pretty beat up from all the cleanings. Finishing the sump tomorrow too. Time to set the baffles. Now to get a rough idea on the plumbing. I will post a new pic in the morning. (better lighting)

The silicone was more than half gone in some places and was not sealed on most of the edges. (Just the front) I cut the bad away with a razor blade but left a bead in the corner. I am putting new silicone on today. It will get a good healthy seal since the trim will cover the corners and you won't see it anyway. I figured better safe than sorry. Other than that, the tank is in really good condition. I cleaned up the glass with vinegar and it looks great.

so i may have missed something, your putting vertical strips of wood from the stand to the canopy to cover the edges correct?? Ive always been interested in doing that. if that is in fact what your going to do, could you let us know how it went.

Yup. Need to cover the chip in the side. Figured with it being so big, the corner trim won't block much. Going to put a base trim on, 90 degree for the corner and a taller trim for the top for the drawer brackets. Then the light will sit on top of the trim attached to the brackets. Easy access to the tank.

Interesting... I have heard of people putting 1" trim around each of the corners to hide the silicone... But, have never seen it first hand... Sounds like someone did their homework! =)
Nice work Kristie.

I have them on my 90! I love them! They cover the silicone and edges, plus the cover the film algae I cant reach with the Mag-Float (still need to get a razor).

Off to Menard's today. Getting my plumbing!! Pretty easy with 1 outlet and 1 inlet. Got the return pump and ball valve done. Just getting the hard plumbing. I ordered 1/4" thick glass for baffles from A-1 glass...
