1st post
Hi everyone, I just sent in my invitation for membership. Not sure how all this goes but thought I would throw this out there.
I am relatively new to this hobby and learning a lot. I had a 65g predator tank about 15 years ago, before the live rock filtering was known. I now have a 30g set up with about 45lbs of live rock thats been going for about 2 months. 130watts of pc lighting, emperor 300 hob filter, seaclone 100 protein skimmer ( I think I finally have it modified where it's doing a good job) and 1 Koralia 2. I bought a gsp, a zoa, and a fire shrimp from matt at OTP a few weeks ago. Also have a pair of common clowns and a green chromis (would like to remove him if I could ever catch him) and a handfull of snails and hermits.
I have a lot more to do with this tank and am already thinking of bigger and better things.
Dale

Welcome to the obsession. You're definitely not alone. Questions? Ask away. Great group of folks here, ready to share what they know.

Ok... you asked for it. I'll ask this one and be good for awhile as its been bothering me for quite a while now. My son actually is asking me and I can't answer. There are tiny red crawly things on all surfaces of the tank, almost worm like. Can't see them with the naked eye, can barely make them out with a 5x power magnifying glass. I would say there are 4-5 on each grain of sand. Are these bacteria? I thought bacteria would be smaller than that. It is very interesting how much life is really in there.

Nice to have ya with us!
If they kinda look like little bugs could be a type of copepod. There are a plethora of unknown creatures that live in our rock work though that sometimes we may never even see.

Welcome to LARK Dale. I approved you for access into the member's only area (although there usually isn't much posted there). That area is primarily used to provide directions and such to club meetings.
You'll find that many of us here will be just as much, if not more, into reef keeping as you are. Try to make it to the next LARK meeting that will be at OTP in April and you'll see just how many of us there are and you'll be able to meet many of us and ask questions.
As for the tiny red things, there are many different types of things that it could be, but it is probably either some type of small critter or algae, with algae waving in the current being my guess. Without seeing it in a picture or in person it will be tough for anyone to say for sure. Have you checked out www.webwebmedia.com They would be a good place to start to try to find a picture of it in their algae, critters, or pests area.

I could never get a picture of them because of the size but I will take a look at that website. They aren't algae because I can see them move from grain of sand to grain of sand in different directions. There are probably millions of them but I would never had noticed if I didn't have the magnifying glass.
I will try to make the meeting. Would be good to go and I would like to see and possibly get some of the frags I have been hearing about on this site. Don't have any to trade yet but can buy some.

Welcome Dale, I agree with Brian that w/out a picture it'll be hard to I.D. the critter... But, along with WetWetMedia I also find that http://melevsreef.com/id/ is a great place to find stuff just as widely accepted for quality info as W.W.M. is.
BTW questions are definately accepted and there is NO LIMIT to the number asked. Because really if there is something that we can't answer right away it's probably something that we should be researching anyhow thus it helps you get an answer and it helps us learn a little more about this fantastic hobby that seems to control our lives lol.

Hey Dale,
They are NOT bacteria, you are right...bacteria are far too small. I agree they are likely algae, or in come cases 'pods or worms. There are a host of critters, most of which are good, that populate your sandbed.
