300 Gallon, Two room, See through, Picture Frame; Reef
Just found this contest and as fate would have it the timing couldn't be better. I have had reef tanks in the past, but would appreciate any helpful hints that members would like to bestow upon me. I will also update progress with comments and a photo weekly.
This weekend we cut the hole in the wall for the "picture frame" part of the tank and built the base in my office. The tank will be wider than most at 36"; with a length of 66" and a height of 32". It has a corner cut off to give the office trafiic more flow. The location was chosen not only for it's ability to be in viewed in two rooms but it also shares a wall with the outside which we use. We will acess the filters through a siding panel, the lights are MH and the transformers will be placed beneth the floor under the house. (My wife was gone when I cut holes through the wall and floor). We now have exact measurments of the footprint to get the tank ordered. The tank will be ordered this week or the first part of Feb.
Thanks in advance for any help or advice.

This sounds like it's going to be one slick setup.
Welcome to the build!

Photos - in the beginning . . .
The following photos show the tank location from both the recital room and my office. They also show the 2x6 construction I used to build the base. This week we are having two 20 amp circuits pulled for the lights, pumps, and controllers. We are also covering the base with 3/4" CDX plywood so I can give the tank maker exact measurements. We hope to have the tank the end of February.

Sump Wall and Tank Wall
This week we will be installing the two 20 amp cirsuits for the pumps and the lights. The "pump" plugs will all be in the sump. The "light" plugs will be both in the sump and tank, we are placing the MH transformers under the house to keep them cool so the plug needs to be closer to the ground. We are also installing a plug for the thermostat controlled fan and another plug that will be controlled by a switch.

hopefully youre planning something to cut down on noise, i wouldnt think big pumps and gurgling would go over too well with piano recitals. looks like a start of something great though, good luck

Once the electrical gets put in and the flex hoses ran we will insulate and then cover with sound proof board; the largest of the pumps will be located on the outside wall. We don't have many recitals - my 9 year old the only one that can read music, but right now it's the only reason we sit in this room; after the tank gets put in I plan on it becoming my "wine and reef" room. : )

Update on 300 gal see thru
Tank is in and has been up and running since March. I am done with the sand and live rock. I had both flown in directly from Tonga which eliminated the cycling period, great way to go. Kind of strange getting live sand in garbage bags. I have also added additional rock, I'm at about 500 pounds right now. We decided to stick to mated pair of fish and have added 6 different mated pairs of fish and continue to add others as mated pairs become available. I have added maybe a dozen corals, 3 acro, 2 anemones, pulsing xenia (growing wild), 2 mushroom rocks, and a cap. I've also added the necessary hundreds of snails and a few starfish. Because the rock and sand were "fresh" we have had a lot of "bonus" corals and othe sea life, mainly micro stars and feather dusters. I would love to share photos but not sure how to resize them to fit within the confines of this site. I will add them to my family's site this weekend. That site is www.RogueRiverRanch.com The cabinets get installed on Wednesday, can't wait. Thanks for looking, Derek
