Alot of people like Pinpoint. I think with any controller or monitor that has a probe, the probes are considered to be throw aways. They arent expected to last for ever they arent bad or anything, its just the nature of the beast.

That is what the guy in the local club here that has one told me. They probes are about 45 dollars and have to be replaced about once a year. I want something to try to get away from those mad scientist test kits.

I need to learn to stay off of Ebay. This is another one I just found that is from the same company I bought my refractometer from:

Yeah, Im real leary of Ebay. Ive heard lots of people that have had great luck, but I feel beter dealing with a company thats been around and will be if something goes wrong. I heave dealt with Premium Aquatics a lot and have been satisfied every time. They have a great reputation. Same with MRC.

I have a club meeting in 12 hours and I think I will ask more people locally what they use. I wish I could find an all-in-one probe that would do all my tests for me

I say save your money entirely on buying a PH meter. its pointless IMO. Now a PH controller for use with a reactor is a different story......very necessary then.
But with out a reactor just make sure you amintain your alkalinity where it is supposed to be, have a sump with a skimmer, provide good of surface agitation, and fresh air in the room ............ your pH will be fine and you dont even need to measure it.

I bought this little guy a few weeks ago...works great...I checked it with 7.0 & 10.0 solution and it's spot on...one the best "cheap" deals I've gotten (so long as it holds up)!

I had the same exact question, except the one I am curious about looks sort of like the Pinpoint and is quite a bit cheaper than the others.

Now Fly Guy has me wondering about something as well. The last tiem I tested my PH was about 7.8 and my Alk was 3 mEq/L which translates to 8.4 DKH which means they are in the acceptable range; however, not perfect. This was based on the visual color test so I was wondering if one of these would be better than relying on the color tests. This also made me wonder if I need to make some adjustments to the system. I will also readily admit that this was the first time I had tested my PH in 3 months, so please don't slap me.

I would trust a pH probe more than trying to match colors on a test kit. But Fly makes a good point, unless you've got a calcium or kalk reactor or keeping a bunch of sps, a pH probe may not be needed (but still would be a nice thing to have).

That's why I went with the "cheapy" one on eBay...I don't need it for a reactor...I have always had problems with the "color match" PH test kits, and this makes me feel much better about my PH. Again, I have to say (so far) I am completely happy with the one I purchased. I actually like the compact/portable design as it allows me to test any tank anywhere. Heck I can even use it for the pool this summer.
