Need an Accurate Thermometer
I thought my $6 Coralife Thermometers were doing okay until last night. I paniced when the thermometer was showing 75deg F. Before I turned up the heaters which were already set to 78deg F (two 200w visitherms in a 55g standard tank with ambient temperature of 70), I added a second coralife thermometer which read the temperature as 80.2deg F. That's a huge 5deg difference! Now I'm not even sure if either are correct. What's a dead on accurate digital thermometer to get?

I have six digital thermometers and not one is within a half degree of another I finally used a old floating thermometer that I put in the fridge and compared it to a laser temp sensor and decided it was the most accurate, so I calibrated my Neptune to the same temp as the old floating thermometer that was so popular in the 70s

Reef safe? I ended up ordering a pinpoint wireless thermometer, but I'll check them out too. I'll see how it goes compared to the $2 temp floater I got in there now. I stopped using floaters because I've had them break after the suction cup goes bad and they get tossed across the tank by a powerhead.

you will have a couple degree variance in the Pinpoint ones as well. If its any more than that thye will mail you a new one.
when you get it simply take a glass of ice...fill it with water and stir for 30 seconds. put the probe in. it should say 32 degrees. you will know from that point forward how far off that specific probe is and read it accordingly. I have 3 of those pinpoints all reading off the same monitor and like them. but there is 3 degrees difference between the low and the high one

but if they're glass, they can break. That happened in my last tank, and the steel shot went all through the sump. Fortunately it was steel, though, and I got it all up with the business end of a mag float.

Here's the good news. I reviewed the Coralife thermos on the website that i bought them from and before the day was out, they emailed me back saying they are crediting my account for the full price of all four of the thermos that I bought! That's awesome service that will bring my business back. Not that I ever blamed them before for the quality of the product that I bought. Too bad I already ordered the pinpoint from another store because I found a better price.

Just in case there was any confusion... I use my glass floating thermometer to ensure that my digital ones (Neptune) are calibrated correctly. So my Neptune right now reads 78.9 and the digital one in the wetroom that I am unable to calibrate reads 75.7. So I know the one in the wetroom is about 3 degrees off. I do not leave the floating one in the tank

unless you can find one thats so old it still uses mercury, It should be safe, I think any thermometer manufactured in recent history uses alcohol.
