I'm wondering the same thing???

Getting ready to set up a 46 bowfront reef with sump and would like to at least put the pump and maybe lights on battery backup to prevent a disaster when the power goes out (we have frequent power outages). I was thinking just a basic APC UPS 200 or 300 would probably do the trick but don't know for sure. Would like some feedback on any that use these, thanks.

I remember someone say you could hook up a car battery to the ups to last a long time.

Car Battery sounds interesting

Carefull...you would need to run a sealed battery (Optima style) as the standard car battery produces explosive gas by nature. That is why batteries are mounted outside a vehicle's cabin or in a special box vented outside the vehicle.

Is it possible the car battery might overtax the small wires in a UPS charging circuit and cause a meltdown/fire?

If so would a sealed 12V motorcycle/ATV battery work as it is smaller than a car battery but still packs more amp-hours than a traditional UPS battery.

Also, as many car batteries, deep cycle especially, require nearly constant trickle charging I wonder if a cheap solar battery charger would help or be self sufficient to sustain the battery power.

I AM NOT ADVISING ANYONE TO USE ANY OF THE ABOVE. THIS IS JUST FOR DISCUSSION AND NOT FOR ACTION.
