What skimmer should I get?

What do you look for in a new skimmer. Is there a certain volume of water that you need to have filtered per hour. I have a 180g, what do I need to look for and stay away. I hear this is where money should not be held back. Let me know I'm trying to do this tank right the first time...

from what i read and hear the cone skimmers are real good. i have no first hand experience with them i use reef octopus skimmers but check out this site alot of skimmers to choose from. with a 180 gal. tank i would go with something rated no less then 250 gal. i would go with the atb 1040 skimmer.

What is your budget? How much room do you have and internal or external?

+1 it's easy for me to recomend a skimmer that cost a thousand dollars when i don't have to pay for it. check out that site they have alot of skimmers to choose from just keep in mind that you want one rated higher then the total water volume of your system and depending on your bioload.

Octopus skimmers seem to be the hot ticket these days. Great reviews, reasonable prices and big selection.
I agree with chrisd on the capacity rating. It seems a general rule that skimmer manufacturers over rate the capacity of the units. Get as big a skimmer as you can fit. As for GPH of the skimmer, a rule of thumb has evolved over the last few years to process the same amount (roughly) as is going through you sump. So, if your returning 400 GPH from the sump then get a skimmer that will do about the same or a bit more. This goes to efficiency. No sense in returning un skimmed water to the tank. Of course to make this a good working rule of thumb, you want to be sure the lay out and function of the sump allows the skimer to take advantage of these number corelations. But thats another subject!!!!
My current skimmer is a modded MR-2 with two injectors and a 12" addition to the riser. It does great but I am restless with the same thing after several years and will be going to a needlwheel type skimmer and am considering rather large Octopus recircualting skimmer. What I will get will be fed purely by the overflow and this will allow every drop of water from the tank to be skimmed and then an through th sump. It will also allow me to satisfy my gadget fix as I havent made any new equipment purchases in some time and that gives me the shakes!

MOTORSLAVE-

What type of skimmer could you hook to the overflow? I have a 180g all-glass with the two standard overflows. I like the idea of hooking one side to the skimmer, would this work, and what type?

With the size of tank you have(thinking the bio-load must be huge), I would go with a sump/refugium set up..

haha cant link yet

I'm not MS, but any recirc skimmer. There is some plumbing logistics that need to be addressed to have it perform optimally, but it is easy to do.
