Purpose is for algae breakouts and ich control etc.

OK, if you are serious about this than i would look at the Emperor site and look at thier sterilizers. they are very good and have correct ratings on their sterilizers for both protozoan killing and algae killing.

to do this right, it will cost a pretty penny. you will notice that these sterilizers have very large inlet and outlet ports on them. this is to keep the back pressure through the sterilizer to a minimum so they can be run inline with the skimmer.

if you skimmer pump is the OceanRunner 3700, than i would be looking at a flow rate of around 400gph. i would look at a sterilizer that can kill protozoans at a minimum 400gph flow rate. to be even better you could get a sterilizer that is rated to the full 900gph of the Oceanrunner 3700. that way you have some room to expand later.

I plan on using it as a hang on the back of my tank.

it would be better used plumbed directly before the skimmer. that way anything killed would be immediately removed by the skimmer.

i do not see any real advantages to putting it HOB off of the tank. it will not kill any more protozoa here than if it were before the skimmer. if it were HOB than any algae that is killed will release the phosphates back into the display to be used by other algae.

Yup as long as you have proper flow through it.

I have run and 18w Coralife Turbo twist for a few years and never had any problems.

They make a 36w one which would work very well on your tank, plus they are priced very good!
