As you know a sump is constructed using baffles or walls to separate chambers. The only forseeable problem may come from trying to use glass baffles in an acrylic tank because silicone doesn't bond well to acrylic, however many people on TRT claim success with no ill effects, so I wouldnt let that deter you.
Strains of salt-safe aquatic plants are welcome in a 'fuge as they aid in nitrate and nutrient reduction. Additionally, dense strains such as chaeto may harbor beneficial copepods and amphipods.
You may want to place your skimmer first, followed by your refugium, so that your skimmer doesn't remove these helpfull critters from your water. This will also reduce the amount of detritus buildup in your refugium.
