prizms?
I've read that they aren't the best out there, but out of the brands I know off hand(don't want to try something I've never heard of) they seem to be getting the best prices off of ebay. Since they're over-rated at up to 100 gallons, would one work well on a 20 gallon tank? Oh, also, are these the ones people always complain about being loud, or is that another sort?

for a 20g tank, you might be ok. for most skimmers out there i would not put them on a tank that is half the size they say they support. so if it says 50g than a 20 should be fine.

I had my cpr backpack on my 20g, and that seemed to work nicely. I moved it over to my 29g, and not so much. I know Ive seen some CPR skimmer/HOB Refugium combos on there for about $120. Check into that.

I used a Prism on a 20L for years. It worked fine. It's not that bad of a unit for a small tank. Now the Seaclone is another issue...

My pump broke on my Kent Nautalis and until I could replace it I hooked up my old Prizm to my 55. Much to my suprise it pulled out a bunch of dark, stinky gook. I had the air intake turned way down so the noise wasn't bad and it made for a drier foam. Like people have said, I wouldn't pay full price for a new one, but if you can get one used cheap I think they are fine. Besides, it was great having that "back-up" skimmer because I didn't have the $$ for a new Mag pump for about a month.

tagging along.....I have one of these skimmers I dont use much till I put it on my QT tank. I have an issue with adjusting it. If I leave it wide open I get the best skimmate but also microbubbles. If I choke it off I get nearly 0 flow and not much skimmate. I found that I need to pinch the air tube and run it open but this is hard to do. What am I doing wrong here?

Don't like them because they are hard to wet skim with. really a low end skimmer compared to others. go with a remora instead, they are a lot less work for a lot better skimming.

Wow! Hehe, I guess I don't need to worry about it. I just found an ebay store with free shipping that sells the remoras for about $3 more than the best price I'd found without. . . I guess I'm getting a NEW skimmer soon

as much as I bagged on them before. I now got one for free from a coworker and threw it on my 26bowfront. It has been pulling really well for me. I adjust it about once every 5 days to keep it optimal. It was also modded so that I can hook up an airline to the collection cup and it will auto siphon into a separate container, which was very nice for getting the flow dialed in.

not sure why everyone bags on the seaclones so much....with a little modding even IT will skim decent. drill holes in the inpeller (?) blades and it will whip up foam like crazy.

the biggest problems with seaclones is the fact they take up valuable intank room. they are also open bottom skimmers. difficult to keep the bubbles from taking over the tank.

They can be hung on back.
Personally the biggest problems I had with a SeaClone was inefficient skimming and the need to constantly adjust the air injection control.

sorry, i forgot they redesign them about 10 years ago. the first one i had was just a tube in the tank with a bubbler. horribly inefficient. the newer ones do look like they can be modded to at least be usefull.
