The LFS guy gave you good advice.

You can remove the bio balls and put LR rubble in there along with your substrate and macroalgae. This will basically give you a mini tank where pods and other tiny critters can grow and flourish without the threat of being eaten, until they get to close to the return to the display tank.

It is a little too difficult for me to get a picture of it, so I will describe it as best I can. I bought a compact flourescent flood light from Lowes. It is meant for use outdoors and has the photocell in it so it would automatically come on at night. I believe it uses around 26 watts of electricity but is supposed to be the same as 200 watts of regular light. I used an old computer power cord to wire the light and covered the photocell with black tape. It did not seem worth the hassle to remove it. I them mounted the light to a piece of wood and created a small, very rough, stand so it would stand upright behind the tank and shine into the refugium.

I leave it on 24/7 and have had very good growth results with it.

HTH and if you have any other questions just ask.
