canister filter?????

About 6 months ago I changed my fowlr 72 bow into a reef tank. I have about 75lbs lr and just upgraded my protein skimmer from seaclone (piece of Junk) to an aquac remora pro. Now my question is should I eliminate my eheim canister filter and let the skimmer and lr do the work or should I keep the filter on?

You dont need a canister with lr and a skimmer unless you use the canister for flow in the tank. In that case take everything out of it and it will be a power head of sorts. But if you have power heads or a cls for flow I would remove it.

You can also use it for carbon to polish the water once in a while. The issue with canasters is that while they pull stuff from the water, the stuff stays in the water and continues to decay and release nutrients into the water untill you clean it. The skimmer on the other hand removes the junk completly from the water itself. The LR will process the rest of the junk.

So with LR and PS one doesnt ned a filter system ?

The post by motor slave TOTALLY made sence about the decay factor. never really though about that.

How much LR does one need to make this really work ? When going with a PS should ne gove over the rated Gallon lvl also ?

if you are going to set it up without a canister then you're going to need minimum of 1lb of lr per gallon and as far as ps bigger is better.

Nope...the filter is a trap for detritus and other goo that will leach out phosphates and is harmful.

I use a cheapo Wallymart HOB just to stuff floss and carbon in after a water change for one day then throw the media away. I have maybe 80 lbs or so of LR in my 55 and a remora and that works great.
