A quality skimmer and live rock! The rock will provide biological filtration and the skimmer will remove disolved solids. Thats all you need and its the best way to go. Canisters and other "filters" trap the junk but dont remove or process it. The goo stays in the water column and continues to decay till you clean the filter. With the rock, the waste is actually processed. and the skimmer actually removes the solids. Dont skimp on a skimmer either, get a quality unit. Check into the Aqua C Remora or a Backpack!

i agree a sump with a big ol skimmer in it is all the mechanical filtration you need. the biological filtration will be handled by the LR and substrate, if you have a substrate.

siphoning out detritus during water changes is also very important.

I have a cpr backpack skimmer with 30lbs of live rock and about 2 1/2 inches of sand. A uv sterilizer and an aquaclear 70 filter. Should I remove the foam pad in the filter or remove the filter altogether and go with a sump.

CPR Backpack skimmer is great for a tamk that size. 50-60 pounds of LR, No hang on...I have had disasterous results with mine. Frequent H2O changes...siphon the crap off the bottom.
