Zoo Med Power Sweep
Well, I scooped up a Powersweep on ebay for $12. On all accounts they are supposed to suck pretty bad, but I have a new toy to play with, so I'm happy.
Anybody play with one of these? It's pretty much a MJ1200 with an impeller-driven worm-drive to rotate the stream 60 deg constantly. It's really a neat concept, but I have doubts on the longevity of all the plastic gearing.

never used one but always been curious about them for movement. I had the same doubts as you.

Did I ever tell you about the time Brasky went hunting? Well anyway, Brasky decides he's gonna hunt down all four members of the Banana Splits. He stalks and kills every one of them with a machete. They all beg for their lives, except Fleagul.

I had one of these on my first nano tank. They run hot and eventually stop working. You can get them running again with a good vinegar bath but they are not the most efficient pump. I still have it. I ripped it appart (all of the gears) and use it to mix saltwater.

Yeah, I'm worried about the temp, I've got a decent sized system, but it stays at 82 deg, right on the edge of acceptable temp IMO.
Worst case, it will be my mixer pump as well.

I had this same experaiance, except the movement that makes it sweep eventually toasted for me.
The hydor spinning deflector works great for this type of flow diversion and has a better track record in the hobby. It just sticks on the end of your current MJ1200 style powerhead.

I have 2 of them in a 75. The sweep mechanism gets hung up way too easy. A grain of sand will stop it. Happens all of the time. They give you the black pre-filters I guess to keep the debris out, I dont use them. They are simple as heck to take apart and clean out.
It is pretty funny to watch a snail get on the nozzle and go for a ride. I guess not a bad PH for the money.

I had one early on as well and I actually think just the salt in the water alone is enough to jam up the gear and make them quit sweeping. I kept taking mine out and cleaning it, but eventually ended up breaking it.

Well I got it today, it looks new, but some of the parts look well used. It may be refurbished, or I just bought a used one. The stabilizing mount on the back was damaged during shipping, a little disappointing but not a deal breaker to me.
I'm using the foam filter for now, but I'll probably take it off in a few days when it gets dirty.
As for power, I was slightly surprised, it does ave a little bit of juice behind it. To bad it's in my tank, where 270 gph is about as effective as farting at a tornado.

That is one of the best comparisons I have heard in a long time.
