Thats on the drain right?
Looks like a silencer?
Try replacing it with a durso...

Yeah, what is it? A quick search of durso standpipes should give you plenty of info on how to build a cheap and silent standpipe.

It's a drain guard. Sits there blocking snails or anything from going down the pipe. If you forget to clean the sponge and the water levels rises high enough, it floats up allowing water down the top of the pipe. Those things are old school, pull all that stuff out and build yourself a durso.

The reef ready AGA 75 that I bought 12 years ago came with those. Sponges on the drain are really not used anymore by aquarium builders so I don't know if you will be able to find one for sale anywhere.

Oh yuck, get rid of that thing? I had those for about a day before going to the hardware store and getting stuff to make a durso. Mine flushed like a toilet every couple minutes. You can put a guard on your durso's too, I made mine a 1.5" durso and a simple piece of egg crate slips right inside the opening keeping the snails out.
