Rio Failed - Big Surprise(HaHa)

Well I have an older Rio 2500 that decided to fail sometime in the last 48 hours. I know, big surprise. I was only using it as my mixing pump. Only wasted 20 gallons on SW. So now I'm in the process of cleaning the containter and researching a new pump.

On my main tank I have 2 overflows rated at 600 gph each (1200 gph total). I run a Mag 9.5 on itso I get slower flow through the sump. At this point I don't have a backup pump for it so I was thinking that it would be best if I bought a pump that could be swapped from the mixing container to my main system if the need ever arose. That leaves me with few choices.

Quiet One - 980 gph (Model # 4000HH) 120 watts

Mag 9.5 (93 watts) or Mag 12 (110 watts)

I run the pump internally. I want to stay with the 3/4" fitting partly because I travel from time to time and want any failure of the pump to be easy to swap by my wife .

Any Pro's or Con's to either one?

Would there be any benefit to putting an external pump on my return and then using the Mag 9.5 for my mixing?

the only benefit for going external would be to keep things quiet. that is only if you go with a Velocity pump though. other than that i would stick with internal if it is working for you.

as far as pumps go, they are all basically the same. i like the Mags better than the Quiet Ones i have tried in the past. what is your overflow rated at?

2 Overflows rated at 600 gph (1200 gph total). I decided to go with the Mag 12. I'm going to put it in the sump and use my Mag 9 for mixing.

The quiet ones have a problem with restarting after a power failure or just being unplugged. I have 2 of them and both will NOT restart without me pushing the impeller to "jump start" them. They are basically worthless since they are so unreliable.

Go with the mag's for internal/external; or step up to the dedicated externals (velocity as Geoff suggested).

the only problems i have had with Mag 12's are the ceramic shafts. be extremely carefull taking them apart to clean them. any torque off of straight off of the motor will cause the shaft to snap.

even so i have a Mag 12 running now with a busted shaft. still works, just not quite as quiet.
