Mag to Eheim
I purchased a Mag 9.5 for the return on my new 50 gal with sump. I have a Octopus 150 skimmer which claims 530 GPH, so I am relizing the 9.5 may be a little overkill. My main concearn is heat and a little less concearn is noise. I have read the Eheims are cooler running than the mags. If so I was going to return my 9.5 and get a 1260 or 1262. I am looking at about 4' head so the 1262 may be the way to go. Should I switch up before I use the mag and can't return. Thanks for the help.

Also seems the ocean runners use very little electricty (runs cooler?). the 2500 does 650 gph. Are they any good.

If you can swap them, I would swap them and get the Eheim.

Sounds like the Eheim is the way to go. I think I'm going to get the 1260. I was also thinking of going external to reduce heat even more. I know alot of people worry about leaks, but what about mounting right over sump so if it does leak its no big deal? Thanks again.

Pump GPH or Waterflow that is the question. I have a 75G with an Oceanic sump. I am running a Mag Drive 7 with about 5' of lift (hose length) which would give me roughly about 400 GPH from the pump. The general rule states to cycle your water 5 times an hour which it is doing. I do not have any other power heads or pumps. I am wondering if I should add two small Koralia cirulation pumps in the tank for water movement or is it better to step up to the Mag 9.5 and have more circulation thru the sump. I have always had cannister systems and I switched about 2 1/2 years ago. Is there a quieter pump than the mag, **** it is noisy. HELP me out Marine brothers. It is a fish only tank.

I don't like the mags much. You can keep the one you have an add supplemental flow in the tank, or switch to another pump and add supplemental flow in the tank Eheim is by far the quietest and ocean runner is making a run trying to catch them. Long term reliability though, eheim wins hands down. I have one over ten years old still running like the day it came out of the box...
Also you are probably getting more flow then you think. Vertical rise and hose length are only part of the headloss calculations. Tubing size, numer of returns and bends/angles/fittings all play a roll in headloss.

I noticed that once I cleaned the impeller the Mag got even louder. I was reading other sections of the forums and it seems that the Eheim is a quieter unit. would I have to change my tubing. I am running 1/2 flex out of my Mag. The reason I am wondering about movement, is when I go to the stores you see lots of current and I dont notice it in my tank. When I put my fingers over the out spouts (I have two, it is split) I do not feel a strong current, I want my fish to thrive. Does any one have experience with the Koralia pumps, I have a bow front and I thought of adding one in each corner, should they point down and what size, the 1 or the 2.

You may need to adapt the eheim depending upon which one you go with.
As far as the koralias, they are decent entry level wide-flow pumps. I've used a number of them and liked them. As far as the direction you point them, that just depends on your system. Do some reading on closed loops and pumps and see what you like. One may suit your needs better than another

I use the 1260 on my 75 w/ about 4' and I still have to use a ball valve to reduce the flow to keep the turnover at about 5x in the sump.
