How often to change impellers?

My return pump, Catalina CA4000, is a few years old. It rattles when starting up, but takes off and goes fine.

How often should one change their impeller? do they go bad??

CLEAN IT WITH VINIGAR.

Sounds like it may not be seated properly. I've never had to change an impeller, I've cleaned them but luckily never had to replace. Does it look OK when you take it out and clean it? Cracked shaft? Loose parts? Maybe Geoff will lend a hand here.

I have a few pumps that do the same thing,.. It might be worth your while to get another impeller and just let it sit around as a spare part in case you need it.

I've never had to replace an impeller before, usually when my pumps start acting up a good cleaning is all that's required to get it going again.

usally it's the plastic bearings that go.

clean it. wow, who would have thought. But I did take it apart and did see anything, nothing I noted as bad. little brown goop but thats all. Seems to be running ok, very little noise. May try cleaning well then go from there. Found them at Catalinas website for $15.00.

My thought was the plastic blades getting weak over time, and bending too much. but this one has a ring around the blades too, so I wasn't sure.

sometimes the shaft wears and you can replace it or flip it over.
