flow over overflow

I'm setting up a 110 gallon system-typical single overflow,1 inch line gravity drained to sump, then external pump return. I have found that the water drains out of the overflow so fast, that I have had to put a valve on the return line to slow that drain enough to get the overflow water level high enough to make the stand-pipe noise controller in the overflow effective. I guess my other option would be to make the drain slots at the top of the overflow wider, but I shudder at taking a dremel tool to my new tank! Amy thoughts?

Can you attach a photo so we can see what we're working with here. It sounds like an easy fix nonetheless, but would like a pic so that we are on the same page with the fix
