For the spray bar I capped both ends and drilled holes in various positions so thee flow from the bar went all around the bar including behind it. The purpose of the bar is to sweep everything out from behind the rock so you want flow everywhere.
As far as the input out put that will depend on the pump you choose and how it is set up. Never restrict the flow on the intake side of a pump, more is better on the intake side. On the above pic the manifold in the middle is the intake and consists of two 1 1/2" joined to a single 1 1/2" inch line feeding the pump. The reason for two is to reduce the suction force in the tank so its safer for animals and to provide a back up in the event that one does get clogged. The return manifold it fed by a single 1 1/2" line that is reduced at the "T" to 1" both ways, then on to the 3/4" bulkheads that feed both outlets for the spray bar and on to the upper outlets. The amount of flow in a pump choice depends somewhat on what you want in the tank. SPS like lots of flow while LPS and Softies dont need as much and can be sensitive to too much, especialy if its direct flow (not good for LPS and softies and even SPS if its too much) The pump for the CLS above is rate over 4000gph if I remember correctly. You dont need that much! Maybe look at the Sequence Dart or even something smaller. Like I said it depends on what you plan to keep in the tank, and dont worry about the fish and alot of flow, most I have seen love it and if they want a break they get out of it!
