How can you tell if a MH needs to be replaced?

The bulb? Yes. Some bulbs will last longer than others, Most 10K bulbs last about a year, most 14-20K bulbs should be replaced every 9 months.

the colour will tend to shift. if it does not quite look good to you anymore than change them.
