I just recently bought a completely new set up including a 250 w metal halide pendant but discovered the ballast is for a dbl ended 250 bulb is there any way it can be rewired to handle a mogul base light?

Yeah shure,.. First - is it an electronic or magnatic ballast? Who makes it? If it is the magnetic DE ballast it will overdrive the Mogel bulbs and get more light out of them, but shorten there life.

I would be carefull with plugging that in having no bulb hooked up to it.

What it sounds like you have is a ANSI code M80 Magnetic ballast, it consists of a core, capacitor and ignitor, this can fire SE bulbs made to run off a Pulse start magnetic ballast (Not probe start, they have a built in ignitor). It will overdrive the bulbs slightly and decrease there life a touch, but replacing them every 9-12 months you will be fine. This overdrive is actually a good thing if you like bluer bulbs, but know that the bulbs will tend to burn whiter on DE ballasts.

Why do you want to run mogal bulbs off it?
