Hello, im a service electrician however in southern california, id be a very expensive service call.
A couple things could be possibly wrong, you could have a circuit backfeeding to another circuit on a different phase which will cause the main to trip.
Sounds like you have whats called a 3 wire circuit, where you have a piece of romex that carries two circuits that share the same neutral, if that neutral is coming loose it can cause the two circuits to backfeed each other.
Any time you put load on a circuit you cause the wire to expand and contract from heat so sometimes the neutral could be getting contact and sometimes its not from the wire moving. Its very common from people running vacumms, space heaters, etc. This is a very bad problem since it can cause 220 to run through those two circuits and anything you have plugged into them is toast.
You could also have a main breaker thats weak, or possibly cooked itself. Look in your pannel and on the backside of the main breaker see if you see any melting on either the breaker or the plastic that seperates the breaker from the buss bar.
In either case you should hire an experienced electrical troubleshooter out immediately, pay the service fee its worth it.
Hope this helps.
Ps - How old is the house?
