The whole circuit isnt GFCI. I just use one of those plug into the wall ones. Its going to be a couple of weeks before I can get an electritian to check it out, if I dont run anything with high amperage on the line will it be OK?

Electrician

I was wondering if you have tried to plug in the ballast on a different circuit? Turn the 15 amp tripping breaker off and then go to an outlet that is still hot and plug in there.I bet your main still trips ie I think you have a bad ballast shorting to ground.

Hello, im a service electrician however in southern california, id be a very expensive service call.

A couple things could be possibly wrong, you could have a circuit backfeeding to another circuit on a different phase which will cause the main to trip.

Sounds like you have whats called a 3 wire circuit, where you have a piece of romex that carries two circuits that share the same neutral, if that neutral is coming loose it can cause the two circuits to backfeed each other.

Any time you put load on a circuit you cause the wire to expand and contract from heat so sometimes the neutral could be getting contact and sometimes its not from the wire moving. Its very common from people running vacumms, space heaters, etc. This is a very bad problem since it can cause 220 to run through those two circuits and anything you have plugged into them is toast.

You could also have a main breaker thats weak, or possibly cooked itself. Look in your pannel and on the backside of the main breaker see if you see any melting on either the breaker or the plastic that seperates the breaker from the buss bar.

In either case you should hire an experienced electrical troubleshooter out immediately, pay the service fee its worth it.

Hope this helps.

Ps - How old is the house?

Thanks for the answers, I think that the 15 amp breaker it was plugged into is going out. I know I had to much on the circuit, but I didnt think it was a big deal if the breaker tripped every now and again. Now the light is plugged into a different line, and I havent had any problems with either line or the main breaker. There was no physical damage that can be seen inside the box, and once I get the cash I'll get someone to check everything out.

Agreed with all. Get it looked at immediately. Something is very wrong and you could be at a serious risk for a fire right now.

The main breaker in the panel is there to protect the panel bus. My initial guess would be the 15A breaker is bad. When it trips something in the breaker is shorting to ground (through where it mechanically attaches to the panel) taking out the whole bus.
