Lighting time for refugiums?

How long should refugiums be lit? 24 hours? Opposite the aquarium lighting time? I'm confused, because I've read threads where it's recommended that chaeto have a dark period, but I've also heard that fuge lights stay on all the time. (By the way, we've got chaeto in our fuge.)

Thanks,
Brad

opposite with some overlap on each end is the best. that way when the critters are sleeping and still producing CO2 the Chaeto will be pulling it out keeping the pH reasonable.

Thanks Geoff. We're running our tank lights from 7:30 to 5:30, so do you think we ought to run our fuge from 5:00 to 8:00? Does that sound about right?

I run my mh light in the show tank from 11:30am- 8:30pm...when the mh go off the refugium lights come on all night til the mh come back on...

How much flow goes through your refuge??? Mine has a very small flow through the overflow & has 2 maxi 1200's for internal flow on the inside!

That sounds good on the light. I'm not sure what our flow is through our fuge. It's actually an OLD Aquaclear hang on back filter that we've converted to a fuge. We clipped the impeller to slow down the flow. It's a steady flow, but it doesn't stir up the sand in the fuge or tank at all now. It's only about 8-10 inches long, by about the same tall, by 4 inches or so wide. Not very big, but our tank is only 6 gallons.
