Lighting Questions

I was just wondering are there any differences between VHO lighting and PC lighting. I've only had experience with PC's, but I also hear a lot about VHO's. Is one type prefered over the other? I've also notice people mention T5's. Are these any different than the other two. I would be interested in keeping softies, LPS's and maybe a few SPS's (don't know exactly which ones yet).
Also, is there a general rule thumb for wattage per gallon? What are some good sources for DIY lighting supplies? Thanks

For a tank over 48" long it is much more cost effective to use VHO. Also the ballasts are much more versatile as you can use a standard flourescent tube and overdrive it in a pinch. Also I prefer the lighting and overall effect of the VHO's.
