Which do you recommend and why?

Anything but Ipod. Ipod doesn't support drag and drop,.. or at least they didn't,.. you have to load all your music onto it through Itunes,.. which means you can't put documents you want to transport to and from work or anything like that on it.
Plus it's like twice the price of everything else.

IPod.
Hubby was anti ipod so he bought the Zune and proceeded to return it a couple of weeks later due failure. After speaking with the sales person who completed to return for him, he learned that several had been returned for the same problem. Fortunately since it was a hardware issue we didn't have to pay the IMO stupid restocking fee.
He stopped his anti ipod stance and bought one and is happy that he has. There have been no problems with it and it is A LOT easier to find more accessories for the ipod.
Hopefully this helps.

I never really tried doing documents
but I have the video Ipod
it has been mostly bullet proof
it has frozen up 3 times in the last year, but very easy to reset
Itunes is very easy to get around if you remember it's a mac program first

Had the iPod shuffle first (the pack o gum sized one , not the 2nd gen even smaller one) and it was ok, but missed doing anything but play as it was loaded, or shuffle play.
Got a video iPod last year, and liked it a lot more. Have not done (or desired/needed to )anything downloaded online , only have loaded my CD's onto it,and prob have 2 1/2 days worth of non stop play on it currently (with much much more left on it to load on it.
Load the cds on iTunes on your computer, and let it sync to the iPod, no biggie. Can change/remove playlist via iTunes, and then when ya sync the two it'll make the changes on the iPod.
If desired you can load iTunes library to a cd, if you want to go the cd in your auto/home/whatever route, and not need the iPod, if you want to do a grouping of whatever you want on the cd (genre of music/artists, yer own mix cd i suppose)
Other than being tied to iTunes by having a iPod, i really don't know all that much about Zune or other MP3 players.I think like anything , once you get used to iTunes it's ok to navigate IMO.
Never thought i would have anything "Apple" , but with the 2 iPods i have, i'm satisfied with them.
I imagine if i went MP3/Zune instead, i would prob say i liked them, instead of iPod.

thanks for the insights so far everyone
I'm playing with a zune at work that a coworker brought in and I like the fact that I can add music to the device and not be 'connected' to it..I know the Ipod only lets you be connected to one computer. If you connect to another computer and use the ITunes on it, the information from the other computer is deleted.
I was able to add some of my music here at work on her zune and still keep the music she already had on it ....Am I wrong about Ipod doing this?

not true
you can sinc with up to 5 computers and not loose anything
it's just a check option
you cannot transfer files you ripped from cd to Itunes on one compter then go to computer #2 and get files from Ipod to computer
then you need to use a jump drive

let me try to say that a better way
with Ipod you can always go:
ANY computer to Ipod without loosing files on Ipod from previous computers
with ripped files, you can not go:
Itunes on computer #1 to Ipod then Ipod to computer #2
(you can do this with purchased files from Itunes on up to 5 computers)

How about going Creative Labs route. We've bought these and haven't had much trouble at all except finding accessories that aren't specifically IPOD. The creative labs will play pretty much anything and you're not suckered into buying proprietary music that Itunes has. I belive the Zune has the same problem with downloaded/purchased music. I'm still waiting for something in the 200G storage and a little lower price to get myself one from CL.

Never thought of cl...I won't buy music from those 'stores'...if I need to 'sample' music, I just 'borrow' a copy from a friend LOL
I too need lots of space. I have 160 gigs of digital music on a server at the house and woul d LOVE to carry all of it around with me. I'm primarily looking for something that's inexpensive and easy to use at the gym.

The zune is nice, but Itunes is so easy my mom can use it, other mp3 playes use windows media player which is not user friendly. I dont know about the zune software though.
