WOW! That's a biggun'!!

Mote or Tampa Aquarium would be a good place for it. When Greg and I went to the Tampa Aquarium a few years ago, they had one about 6-8". If they still have that one, could be quite a brood mare!

I have never been to Mote, I have been to Tampa Aquarium several times but thats when i was like 12 or so and not really into fish and tanks. One of these days i will have to go back to Tampas and go to Motes.

I've wrestled bigger. Are these hard to keep, or hard to find? I've seen threads on them and people seem to be drawn to htem. Is there something super cool bout them or are they just rare? Not meaning anything bad, I just don't know alot about them.

Mantis Shimps, IMO, are the beauty AND the beast.

VERY dangerous critter to keep. But exquisitly BEAUTIFUL, and pretty intelligent as far as marine life goes. (some marine geeks battle constantly over which is smarter, Octopi or Mantis shrimp).

CHeck out this pic:
http://www.blueboard.com/mantis/pics/cline_meral.htm

Some quick Mantis facts:

They have the most complex vision of the animal kingdom. Capable of seeing about 10x's as many colors as humans.

They can strike with the force of a .22 caliber bullet!

That strike is also one of the animal kingdom's fastest movements.

Males have 2 *****es, and femals have 2 vaginal openings.

Some Mantis shrimp mate for life.

(I have one, and it's VERY neat!)

They often hitchhike in on live rock, especially Caribbean rock.

I had a customer losing fish and never finding bodies - we tried traps etc., but never caught anything. We were moving her tank and carried the rock in salt buckets. When we got to the bottom of one bucket, lo and behold was a bright red mantis - I guess he got a bit dry in the rock and dropped into the water that had pooled in the bottom of the bucket. And so ended her mysterious fish loss problem. We brought the mantis to the shop and found a suitable home for him - a customer had a 7 gallon species tank for him.

They are very neat creatures. That particular one was a spearer - not a smasher, so she never heard him clicking in the tank.

you can buy them pretty much anywhere. or if you're REALLY unlucky (like me), you'll get one without even knowing it! hahaha

Saltwater.com has 'em. (green and Peacock), also check your LFS. There's a few other places on-line that have 'em too.

skeety, that link sceered me to death, I dont know if I can sleep tonight. those things are the freakiest creepiest things ever! very smart and fascinating, but definitely freaky and creepy. did you know the human eye can see over 10 million colors? (its true, it says so on a poster at my work..an optometrist office). so if mantis shrimp can see more than that, kudos to them!
Tim, I dont know how you can sleep at night knowing there is one so big so close to you
