I think I got it figured out
I had to delete the upper and lower filters in Regedit and reboot

then I had to re-install I-tunes

now the true test

I need to reboot

I got my fingers crossed

So does the drive work with DVDs?

Optical drives now are basically driverless (as in windows supports a LOT of drives without needing to install separate drivers, except for the really old stuff).

If the drive doesn't read any sort of media, it's shot. It may actually be less hassle to buy a brand new drive, then to send everything in and wait forever; drives are less than $40 shipped.

we figured it was the drive
since it's under warrenty, I'll go with the replacement route
