Like Doug said, correct training is key to becoming proficient. I do think Cynthia is strong enough to handle something bigger than a .380 and there's lots of compact 9mm's, or even .40's and .45's out there. Training with a lower powered caliber to start is good, then move up to whatever she's comfortable with. You can get conversion kits for several big-bore autos to shoot .22 for cheap, low recoil practice. Sig Sauer even has conversions for switching center fire calibers in some models, like the P226. Lots of options out there.
Carrots & Apples are the first step toward rider-horse bonding.
Consensus among the pros that carry for a living is 'Bigger is better' but for personal protection, even a little .22 is better than nothing.
the Flinch Factor is a big deal with many folks. A well-placed .380 in JHP is preferred over a .45 shot in the floor. Always take two first shots anyway. Double-Tap is the way to go, then more if needed. Way back when I was 'on the job', I carried a .357 with .380 backup.
Guns aren't for everyone and among those who enjoy target shooting or carry for personal protection, there are as many opinions as there are models and calibers. Main thing is to choose what you are comfortable with and become proficient with it.
***Disclaimer*** My opinions are just my opinions.

Thanks for all the advice Dick. Bersa makes a compact 9mm that we may want to look at as well for her. The .380 just fit her perfectly and seemed like a good "beginner" gun that will be carried in the backcountry.
I had a .357 S&W revolver but had to sell it when things got a little tight back on top of that wretched mountain. I'll probably go that route again, but for Cynthia that Bersa looks like the way to go.
She had a very bad gun experience, so it will take a lot of training and confidence to get her on the course. There is an NRA woman's course that I am going to get her into as well.

I personally feel more comfortable with a revolver than a semi. I know a lot of deptartments switched to semi for the magazine size. I sort of figure there won't be many situations that more than 6 is needed. To my simple mind I am afraid chambering and turning off the safety would just be too complicated if I actually had to use it.... A single action revolver I can shoot in my sleep. Of course if I take a job in corrections after school I may very well be required to get proficient with a semi.
I like a a nice S&W .38/.357. .38 is good to practice with but .357 stays loaded in the nightstand. I used to practice with a Ruger single six with a mag and LR cylinder. It was a whole lot of fun until it got stolen

Did I ever tell you about the time Brasky went hunting? Well anyway, Brasky decides he's gonna hunt down all four members of the Banana Splits. He stalks and kills every one of them with a machete. They all beg for their lives, except Fleagul.

Had a nice time with the horses but man did the weather turn terrible. Hopefully softball will get cancelled with all this lightning.
The start time is 9pm and I have to be at work at 5:30 and we have customers in so need to have the A game.
Now Billy Mays is dead. KIA we just need one more for that double set of three bad things for this to stop happening.

Good afternoon all,..
I was fooling around in a pool today and got the bottom half of my front tooth got knocked off - the fake part of it. Ouch.
This makes me wish that I still had a job, and dental insurance - because I moved states and I was on an HMO I didn't qualify for Cobra.

Ouch, Whiskey! That had to hurt and the cost double hurts. If you recovered the broken part, super glue might work.

I'll be okay,.. this tooth was the one that I knocked out with a pair of vice grips as a child,.. then I had to have a root canal on it.
Since it's all drilled out already, it doesn't hurt too bad, but it makes my mouth feel really funny.

Heh,.. nope - no recovery. And since it's all sharp now more bits keep coming off as I eat - good thought though.
