ShirlyM,
They are manufacturing tools of the trade in the semiconductor fabrication industry (hence the nickname wafer fab). Takes a 1.5" to 12" wafer of material (ie: GaAs, Si, or InP, etc) and thru a countless series of different process steps spits out microchips in the end. The cell phones, pagers, PCI cards in computers that we all use now days incorporate these resulting chips.
Sounds like what DeepSix does is what I used to do, and to a certain degree what I still do today.

i am a supposed "life skills worker" for people with mental retardation. but honestly i get paid to play yahtzee, watch tv, and sometimes go to baseball games & movies...
it's not all fun & games though, all of the folks i work with have other disorders besides slow learning...on saturday i got punched HARD in the forearm by a 220 pound mentally retarded man with gender indentity disorder (thinks he's a woman) and not only this, he's schizophrenic (sp?), AND has borderline personality disorder...FUN! just another 9 hour shift!!!

Hey Poker... in the mid 80s I worked as a temp at Monsanto (MEMC) where they pulled silicon rods, then made slices for chips. Is that what you're talking about?

that's right, poker! cath, the wafer fab i work at make the chip set that goes into cell phones, among other chip sets as well. its an amazing process from start to finish. here is a pic of the "wheel chamber" used on a Applied Materials Implanter. the wheel is about 5 tall and spins at 1200+rpm. the wafers are held in place using centrifical force.
from the amat website:

Ion implantation is a key technology in forming the transistor structures of all semiconductors and may be used many times during chip fabrication. During ion implantation, silicon wafers are bombarded by a beam of electrically charged ions, called dopants. Implantation changes the properties of the material the dopants are implanted in, to achieve a particular electrical performance. These dopants are accelerated to an energy that will permit them to penetrate ("implant") the film to the desired depth. Dopant concentration (or "dose") is determined by controlling the number of ions in the beam and the number of times the wafer passes through the ion beam. The beam energy determines the depth at which the dopant will be placed.

another awesome tool i have to fix is the rtp (rapid thermal process). it uses 187 1000watt tungsten filament light bulbs to heat a wafer to over 1000'c in under 10 seconds.
the robots.....

Far out, DS! I used to weigh dopant for the work schedulilng department. 8 hours a day of exacting work like that was ...umm...something else again.

There are many interesting workers out there. I work for a small company that dries out flooded homes, business and documents. I do everything from payrol, HR, invoicing, customer service, forman and just about anything else a company needs, I do it. It is an interesting job and I have learned a lot about just about everything a company needs to know.

I used to work at Motorola, til I was part of the downsizing in July. Only 2 plants will remain open in AZ at the beginning of 2003.I worked in the cleanroom (wafer fab). At the one plant I worked at (not the closing one I was sent to),they had the plasmatherms.
On Monday, I start my new job It's for a cabinet manufacturer (Timberlake). I'm not sure what I will be doing yet, but part of it is taking info & entering it into the computer, scheduling appointments & such. It's thru a temp agency & is a temp - hire position. Hopefully, once we get some bills paid off, I can go to school at night time.

Freckles,
Small world!
The company Im employed by (currently Unaxis USA Inc., or what used to be Plasmatherm) had 4 on-site service engineers at Motorola in AZ. They serviced I believe the 4 or 5 Plasmatherm VLR Versalock etch tools there.

I am a full time student (Pre-veterinary) and work full time as a loss prevention officer in a department store. I get to watch cameras and bust shoplifters and internal theft all day, and in this part of town there is no shortage of shoplifters. In fact, most of the shoplifters would make better track stars as fast as some of them can run!! I am aslo the bass player in an all original modern rock/alternative band trying to get signed. Been playing the bass guitar for 13 years now. Just got through recording in Nashville at a place called the Tracking Room (awesome studio by the way), now the demo we cut is going to be shopped to all the big names by some connections we have (fingers crossed) If we get picked up my veterinary goals will be put on hold!! Here is our web site, I am the one with the long curly hair. www.haphazardrocks.com
