Dreamweaver is very highly recommended as an excellent web-authoring software. I write mine in notepad with basic html code, which you can learn for free from a variety of html help sites on the net.

If you do a simple search, you'll find a bunch of other sites for learning html.
Most ISP (Internet Service Providers) give you X amount of space for a personal home page for free. Also, at anyone's site, you can click on "View" in the menu bar, then "Source" and you'll see what their html code looks like for their page. If you look at those done with various authoring programs, it might look a bit odd, but if you look at a page done with straight html code in notepad, then it will look like the "real thing" as you learn it from the above-listed website.
This help is just a start, but once you get started, you'll get the hang of it and it will get easier and easier.
