Cat 4 and sucking in some dry air from Texas now but still a mess..the eye is getting bigger.

The only thing that will not suffer are those nutria giant rat things unless this storm mellows out a little and breaks down. My heart goes out to all of the families that have to suffer or even worse hang out in the Superdome or an evacuation shelter.

What a mess!

Looks like New Orleans is a mess, but not as bad as it could have been. There is still some flooding occuring from water seeping over the levee, but it seems the levee will hold.

All of my family evacuated from southeast of Houma (Montegut area). Reports coming in say moderate damage in Houma...not as bad as it would have been if Katrina had come in a little farther west. Good thing cuz my sisters in Houma didn't leave. National Guard was deployed about an hour ago to survey damage and conduct search and rescue in the coastal areas south of Houma so we won't know for a while if my parents home is still standing or not. The roads are impassible from trees and water and of course phone lines are down. Also, my neice lives in Galliano (10 miles west of where the eye came ashore) her house made it through Camille but it was also newly built at that time.

Good news is everyone in my family heeded the mandatory evacuation of Terrebonne parish south of Houma....now it's going to be a matter of do they have anything to go home to.

Bodies floating in debris

It supposedly collapsed this morning, but reports were sketchy and couldn't be confirmed. I'm sorry to hear that it's true.

There are also reports of bodies floating in the New Orleans debris. Here is a good site to get up to date news flashes.

10 deaths total on the weather channel and no real good news yet here.

The leaks in the superdome were described as mild after the eye passed.

Where is the up to date news on this? All of the reporters are in Florida or Mississippi.

My daughter, living in Ocean Springs MS was 30 feet above sea level, got 6" of water in their house. Major storm surge. Every friend and relative I've contacted in MS and Louisiana, has flooded houses. My family from coastal Alabama is staying with me, (15 in our house, whoopeee!) and can't get home to even tell if their houses are still there.
