Agreed, IF it comes to termination, use the .223 rather than a .22 better chance of getting the job done cleanly, less chance of a wounding
Shirley, When I first moved back up to Oregon, my neighbors had a Great Pyrenees named Uriah(Heep) what a great dawg, big lovable sweetie not slobbery and obnoxious ;ike most St Bernards I had met

I am so glad we are moving out of state in two years. I had to leave my fun guns up there in the interesting .223 and other calibers. You just can't run around here with the .357 Chief's Special in your glove box in California Also, now they banned .50 cals (Thanks Arnie you goober) which would be great for a coyote if you had an hour to set it up, check the windage and get 2000 yards away first.

Great Pyrs, as you probably know, are used as livestock watchdogs and patrol the perimeter of the property several times during the night, emitting their lion-roar bark every so often...and the sleep a lot during the day.

Shirley, believe it of not, i thought about it,,,as a "patrol" dog,,,even a Caucasian Mountain dog(think that's the breed name) as the breeders put it:
"natural protection of a .45",,,
wished i'd known you at the time you moved back up,,,I'da adopted him,,,sounds like a good dog,,,,
only gotta play nice with doxies,,,,and not run from them LOL.
No problems lately, but have my eye out for trouble, when i get off working midnite inna few days, i'll start looking for problems,,heaven help them,,,if they act up,,,
I'm rural enuf,no one ever has called when i ,ummmmm, when a firearm discharged,,,
the neighbor lady did round up her PITA dogs(don't get me started) when i was doin "blank" pistol training w/my cousin out here,,,musta looked pretty strange ,when i pointed a starters pistol at /near my cousin's (soon to be K9 dog) and fired,,she rounded up all 6 of those pain in the behind dogs REAL quick,,,,still laugh about it,,,

Thanks, but i got two great German Shepherds,,,they'd get there faster,,
One's Police protection trained, and the other will follow that one's lead, no doubt,,if i point and give the German command to "take down".
not too much worries here tho,,only when i let the lil house dogs out,,4 doxies,,,afraid they might tear the coyotes up too much,,,don't laugh, my $$'s on them,,,well 1/2 of them,,,

We already have our humane society volunteer looking for either a new Aussie Shepherd or a Blue Healer. I split up a few years back with my ex but the Aussie I swear pulled her through cancer later.
Shepherds are just amazing...and they seem to understand English somehow. I cannot understand how Border Collies are so smart while a regular Collie is dumber than our terrier that insists on pooing inside.

You guys are going to think I am crazy but they keep llamas to protect the sheep up in Idaho on a lot of hobby farms. There is some weird relationship where sheep will only host on that kind of protector or something. Anyway, the llama is supposed to be vicous enough to keep out a wolf and the sheep will only put up with a llama. Coyotes won't even get close. I would get one for your yard and problem solved.
The real ranchers keep a crew of border collies, but that is not nearly as cool.

We have coyotes around here. Not a huge population, but close into suburbia. I have seen them while riding and the barn was in a very populated area. Strangely, deer, turkeys and coyotes don't bother my horse at all. Though leaves crackling do. Go figure her pee brain.
As to the question that was brought up as to why everyone doesn't have big aggressive dogs vs smaller ones. Sometimes it is too much a liability to have large dogs. Especially with lots of kids going in and out. I have a 14 year old lab/pit cross and she is the most brilliant dog ever. She would lay her life down for this family. She has killed 3 possums in our yard. Those are mean suckers. Shakes them twice to break their neck and then leaves them alone.
Our next dog will be a whippet which is a great rabbit hunter, but would NOT be much protection. Certainly couldn't take on a coyote. Having kids who now have other kids come over, a large dog can be intimidating and a liability. When I was single, Rio was the perfect dog. I do believe she kept me from harm more than once. NO ONE would have been able to get to me except *through* her. God help 'em.
Now, I need docile and non aggressive. If that makes sense. Though this is far off topic.
Can you let out the shepards for a few nights? Or will they wander off? I bet they would run them off.
