Jeff don't know about midwest yodel dogs but out here they are very adaptable and sneaky making them good at living on the edge of suburbia. Unfortunatly they are very good at utilizing pets as a food source, they are pretty clever and determined so unfortunatly once they settle on a territory peacefull cohabitation is hard, and often results in the coyotes being targeted for "removal"

Yup Doug,,,,gotcha,,,
No problems lately,,,did check out the "farm store" south of me this am,,,most all they had was Bobcat urine,,,but what i read on the bottle, it would only keep away critters that bobcats, foxes, and coyotes would feed on,,,
My take on the products use, I would prob attract coyotes , so they could mark(hike a leg) what i put down to begin with
Kinda can't wait for a snowfall, so i can see if i am getting movement on my property,,
Have not checked on the states regs on this, but everyone i talked to last couple o days agreed,,,,varmits, no season, no limit,no problem. won't nuke them if i don't have to, kinda go along the lines of not wanting to cull the critter food chain from the top, but if push comes to safety off,,it'll happen.
(go figger, the farm store ran outa everything "Acme",,,)

Just checked th e Ind. DNR site, looks like they have a season, now until Feb.,
although it's also said you can take coyote from personal property if they are nuisance(sp?) only thing you gotta do is notify DNR within 72 hrs, and they will tell you what to do with resulting "result".
population has been growing since the'70's,
males average 55 lbs,,,,,,yeeeshh!
and litters number up to 10,,,,,

Wish I could offer some solution to your coyote problem. But, I am glad that your first impulse is to deter (sp?) them from entering your property rather then killing them. If I hear anything that I can share with ya I will. Aside from pushing them off a cliff and tossing a large rock to chase them down with.

this post brings back very sad memories. When I was a youngster, I lived in Calabasas CA, for a while and the dog that I grew up with, "whistle" a little poodle that was really old, like 14 years old, and it was blind and deaf. My mom went out for dinner and when she came back the dog was outside dead. The coyotes snuck through the fence and half ate our dog. I still get kinda sad because that was my dog all through my childhood. It was old, and it probably was going to go soon, but I didn't wan't it to go out so terribly like that. But the thing that really bothered me, was our other dog, a dalmatian was locked on the side of the house and couldn't help the old dog. I am pretty sure the dalmation would have scared them away because it is pretty big.
So, I would say go ahead and shoot those little pests, and when you do say "This Ones For Whistle!!!!!"
Oh yeah, and my moms new dog, a little schnauser was attacked by a raccoon a couple nights ago. That's why I am getting a big dog, serious. Why do people get those small dogs anyway?? I mean its cool if you have bigger dogs too, but not just small dogs. I know this chick at work that has 2 small dogs and she is getting a rottie because she realized the danger out there.

Bummer RW124,,i feel for you,,,
To let you know, the small dogs here (Dachshunds) were originally bred to go inna hole after a badger,,and they would pull the doxies out by their hind legs to retrieve fore-mentioned badger. although i do have one that is gettin up in age(16-17) and was a kick behind hunter in his day,,,the others have no problem wanting to tear apart my 2- 100#+ policework- trained Shepherds when they see them outside,,once one got out and proceeded to latch onto the upper hind leg of one of them, kinda comical, but he was seriously gonna get him some of that.(the Shepherd looked back at me with a look:"wat the heck is this thing?")
Seriously, the four doxies are watched very well when they go out,all pretty much in my sight all the time, and i give them credit for "sniffing " out any invaders in the vicinity. don't think(hope) anything will happen. like i said the only thing that worries me,is the fact that i'm on open area from the front, kinda well lit at night, and i hope the advantage will go to the lil dogs on spookin any invaders in the area,,they won't run away,,,i honestly hope i can stop them from chasing(hopefully) any coyotes away b4 they get to far from me,,,
coyotes are not bold hunters, they pick a ez target,,,hope they read up about doxies,,,,
And i'll do whatever i need to do to protect my pets,,,,although i hope i never have to,,,

My favorite cat got eaten by them. They are all over in the hills here. I did accidently hit one once in my old VW bus and after losing my kitty felt no remorse even though I will wreck my car before hitting a squirrel.
If you do have a .22 get some subsonic rounds and good riddance.

Junkzoo, I didn't realize you had those germ shepards. Now those are the kinda dogs I'm talking about. I wan't either a german shepard, alaskan malamute, mastiff, or a rottie when I get out of college. With your 2 shepards, I can't even imagine the coyotes coming anywhere near your house. Just let those big guys run around at night and scare them off.
I think the big mistake my mom made though, was just seperating the dogs. If the other dog wasn't left on the side of the house, it might not have happened. Coyote's are cowards!!!
Oh and when I was in the boyscouts, I was going into Angeles Crest Forest, and we ran over a coyote and the whole van jumped up like we hit a speedbump.

.22-250 or a .223 will work the best for varmits.
Just a word about Mastiffs...they're big babies. Ours beats the door down to get back in the house when the UPS guy comes down the driveway. She's scared of anything that changes in her normal routine.

Jeff...put a Great Pyrenees on your farm...they'll leave for good. The Pyr won't kill them, but his nightly rounds and low rumbling bark will keep them off the premises.
I used to have one in Lousiana...Quinn...185 lbs of good-hearted dog. When I moved back to Indiana, we couldn't keep Quinn, so I placed him with a 4-H sheep farmer/State Farm Ins. agent who lives in Romney, IN. He never lost another lamb again to a coyote after Quinn joined his herd.
Great Pyrs, as you probably know, are used as livestock watchdogs and patrol the perimeter of the property several times during the night, emitting their lion-roar bark every so often...and the sleep a lot during the day.
