wanna diagnose my car trouble?

oh cripes what next...
so I'm half way home, and I began to hear what sounded just like a ringing in your ears, only it wasn't my ears, it was my car. It slowly began to get louder, just a little, but noticable.
I was almost home so I kicked the cruise off, as I pressed on the brake I heard that sound, now more like a whine, get loud then slow down as the car slowed, and then increased as I accelerated down the driveway. When I got in the garage I popped the hood, it was in park so I pressed on the gas, and it got louder, so ok, fuel system? Fuel pump perhaps? It's not the cruise cuz it didn't change when the cruise was off.

I have no clue what's going on, and I flat out can't afford ANOTHER bill right now, we've just gotten hammered with unexpected bills lately... any mechanics here who have an idea?

Hey im a licenced auto tech! Finally something i have experience at that i can help out here haha (im new to the aquarium hobby). Its a real challange to diagnose a problem without being able to hear it, or see it, so if possible could you audio record or video record this and send it to me? Just a video from a regular digital camera would be fine. A "whine" type of noise that increases with engine speed, is most likely going to be an alternator, power steering pump, or waterpump. All things that are belt driven that will change noise output with engine speed. They all have bearings that will go bad eventually. Also it could be your air conditioning compressor if you have that option. What id do is pop the hood and rev up the engine, pay attention to the belt driven components under the hood, see if you can pinpoint where its coming from. Also, what kind of car do you have? Turn on your air condtioning, see if the noise goes away. If it does its your compressor clutch. Let me know how it goes,

Greg

I agree with Greg also could be in the brakes like a frozen caliber or just plain worn out brake linning.Easyist is check your power sterring and see if it's full. Then you can buy a waterpump lubercating liquid that you can pour into radiator(when cold).

My ac belt squeeled before it broke and I got a new one. Then the motor blew so hubby got me a new car.

I agree 100%. If it increases with engine RPM, then its got to be something that's spinning when your sitting still. My bet is on something driven by the belt like the things listed above. ( By the way, i also worked as a mechanic for several years)

the heat and everything was off so the ac wasn't turning.
it's not the brakes, this sound is up high by the firewall. It doesn't do it when it's cold either.
I've had the water pump changed and the light came on for that... I have a sneaky suspicion that it could be the alternator. I'm going to drive it to my mechanic, it's about the same distance that I drive from work, so maybe it'll act up by the time I get there so he can see what's going on.

but now watch, I'm a girl, so I'll tell him it's doing this and that, and when he looks at it, it won't do it!

oh my hubby is great too! So handy, and since it is in fact the alternator he can fix that easy, I'm going to call around now to find a rebuilt to put in. My mechanic came out and looked, but it wasn't making any noise. He put his head in there and said "whew! that stinks!" lol! yep, the alternator is starting to burn up. Good, this is an easy affordable problem, finally!

If you have a Machine shop nearby, sometimes they can rebuild your alternator way cheaper than buying one.

Depends on the car really...for my old Volvo a new Bosch was 125 bucks but for my Sentra they wanted 400 until I really dug and got one for 250. Those prices are all over the map and definately look around.

I cannot understand an alternator whirring failure as ringing though, but guess I would describe a bearing going bad differently.

Naw its the muffler bearings going south, the 4th order harmonics they produce resonate in the alternator gimbal mounting and cause that misdiagnosis
