Aside from the horrendous loss of life it's just unbelievable to me how much land and vegetation was just scrubbed away by the waves. I can't help but wonder how the loss of the topsoil and vegetation will effect the food supply, further threat of erosion, animal habitat and appeal for tourism (since so many of these areas depend heavily on tourism for their economies.) The effects are going to be felt for many years.

I live near the land slide in California and the people moved back in, IMO this is stupid, no life or view is worth the possibility of another killer landslide. We have been drenched this past week with a few inches of rain, and now the landslide area is a mud pit. The homes that weren't damaged by the slide are no filled with mud. They should ge the hint that mother nature wants the land back. It a shame that such a beatufull area is so trashed!!

The salt left behind can't be too godd for the vegetation either. I have used rock salt to get rid of vegetation around my driveway. It takes a while before anything will grow.
