How long was the big tank up? What was your bio load like? What were your feeding habbits like? Was it a primarly SPS dominated tank?
I would really love to just return 500GPH, keep the stock setup with the 3/4 drains, and run with it, but I'm worried about it.
I think I need to do some research on people's return pumps.
I use a setup like what you describe on my 50G,. it's probably returning 100GPH at most, and it loves it,.. it has a high bio-load, and it's a softie tank,.. but I'm a bit worried about doing this on a larger SPS system.

The tank was up for a little over 2 years. The bioload was on the light side of moderate. I did feed heavy and it was starting to roll into a SPS dominated tank, but I could bore you with how I plunked a coral in from a reputable dealer and introduced vermetid snails into the tank. A series of events, or a theory on a series of events, caused the vermetids to explode. On a tank that big you just can't get the rock out and control them They wipped out all my colonies but one. It's a long story and not fair to base the theory on it as my wife had cancer and we were fighting the insurance company and my time was zero for the tank at the time. It was one of the deciding factors on tearing it down.
The point of the thesis was to point out that returning the cleanest water back to the tank was more imporant than returning more water that was less clean. I'm not sure it was the right answer, but it was certainly a point to be discussed. Kind of an open ended question. the problem is that I don't think that side-by-side comparissons are effective in discussing it as each tank, although similiar are so different
I still feel that 3-5 times the volume through the sump is a good starting point, but a little less may be the way to lean as long as you have the means to get it out of the display. Then slowinging the flow through the skimmer to ensure the maximum amount of disoved and organic matter can be extracted on the first pass. Some research has indicated that excess of two minutes of contact and dwell time may be necessary to remove certain particulate waste from the water column
Sorry, so much info to share, it's hard in only a few paragraphs

Ya, it is allot of info to share,.. You don't have free long distance do you? (Everyone but me seems to)
The other thing I'm looking at is my Skimmer,.. It's not recerc, so I can't feed it at a slow rate too. If I were to recerc my skimmer, and feed my tank drain directally into the skimmer, then run 300GPH through the drains, I'd be keeping water in the skimmer for about a min and a half.
Huh. Or mesh mod it,.. you said that reduces the ammount of water flowing through it, but then I can be reskimming water.
Hmm,... It's allot to think about anyway, I could just try it with the slow flow through and stock skimmer to see where it gets me.

I think we still have sort-of free long distance. Both are decent ways to slow or control the flow through. Might be worth disussing
