Your endeavors for today look good Doug. Like Whiskey said, it will look really nice in a few weeks when it's grown in but it's definitely going to be more mowing! lol

Here's a question for you,.. I've always felt that more flow to the tank doesn't do much if that same flow is not going through the skimmer. What is your take on that? Why put 1,000 to the tank if your only putting 500 to the skimmer?

Why are you running your skimmer off your return pump? It seems that running the skimmer off the drain would be the better move because the skimmer would skim all the water going to the sump and not re-skim any water.

Well to quote a hollywood consultant... Location, location, location Due to where the wetroom is and how the plumbing needs to be ran, it makes feeding the skimmer effectively off the drain impossible. I could run the skimmer in the garage and have the drain feed the sump, but I'm worried about any open portion of the system in the garage allowing toxins into the system.

As far as the flowthrough rate goes, I found with the last build that I pulled out just about the same amount of skimmate, but it was darker and quite frankly, stunk way worse than running a higher flow rate. So I'm not sure how to really judge skimmate, but it sure seemed nastier when I slowed the flowthrough rate down. Obviosuly this will be a completely different system and through trial and error, I'm sure I'll find the sweet spot again

Ideally I would rather have 2-3 pumps running the wet leg of the system, but I don't have enough parts sitting around. I have 4 Gen-x 6000s, an eheim 1246 and 1250, the panworld 200ps and I need to buy a dart... It's not that the system won't be re-done later, it's just I'm trying to do the maximum tank for the least amount of expenditure right now

Yes it would be! I'm tempted to just pitch everything I don't want out the front door into a pile and torch it out there! Keep the good stuff inside. LOL

Aah,.. I here you I'm trying to do things on somewhat of a buget myself, and it often means setting things up just a little odd,.. but if you can make it work just as well, then no worries

Do you think I'll have serious problems running only a 500GPH return rate on a 180? I mean technically if that's all your passing through your skimmer then I'm doing the same thing right?

You looking to sell either of those Ehime pumps?

I prefer to turn my main tank over 4-5X per hour through the skimmer, but if I go with what I'm thinking then I am putting the system through the skimmer at 2.77*/hour.

I'm still trying to figure out what I'm going to do about these very small drains, that's why I'm asking all these odd questions.

Funny you should ask this question about turnover

One of the reasons I'm here is that I posted a long thesis elsewhere which backed up another's theory on slower flow through rates and how the asian community was doing incredible aquascaping, follow up by good husbandy results. Needless to say I got flamed like you wouldn't beleive, all based on a theory that was suposed to be discussed

I truely beleive that the 3-5 times flow rate is great, but I only had about 2.5 on my big tank and had incredible results. Constatn parameters, never a hint of No3, Po4 etc.

Here is a quick example... On my other tank I couldn't get chaeto to grow much at all and after dinos, I never had any visible algae... In my 125 with 7X turn over through the sump, I have algae problems, No3 is readable and Po4 is always detectable. I also grow cheato like it's going out of style.

It's not the best comparrison as there is defferent equipment, but I truely beleive that the husbandry technique I used on the big tank was one that worked very, very well and I'm going to try to dulicate in on this build. Obviously I've upped the flow through the tank this time, but may play with it as I go

And after it's set up, I'm going to have another liquidation sale so the Eheims may wind up on the auction block

How long was the big tank up? What was your bio load like? What were your feeding habbits like? Was it a primarly SPS dominated tank?

I would really love to just return 500GPH, keep the stock setup with the 3/4 drains, and run with it, but I'm worried about it.

I think I need to do some research on people's return pumps.

I use a setup like what you describe on my 50G,. it's probably returning 100GPH at most, and it loves it,.. it has a high bio-load, and it's a softie tank,.. but I'm a bit worried about doing this on a larger SPS system.
